UCO Drops Match To No. 2 Lopers

EDMOND (Oct. 25) – Central Oklahoma put up a fight, but in the end the Bronchos couldn't stay with No. 2-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

UCO led in all three sets before dropping a 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to the unbeaten Lopers. The Bronchos fell to 15-8 overall and 7-6 in the league, while UNK improved to 22-0 and 13-0.

"UNK may be the best team in the country and I thought we battled them hard the whole night," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We had some chances in each set, but they were just too good for us tonight."

The Bronchos hit just .115 in the match, collecting 30 kills in 139 attacks with 14 errors.

Lauren Jenkins led Central with eight kills and three assisted blocks, while Bailey Combs hit .353 with seven kills. Malia Kaaiohelo had five kills along with five total blocks.

Dominique Lipari had another superb defensive showing in digging up 33 attacks. The senior standout moved into second place on UCO's career digs list with 2,207.

The Bronchos led 2-1 early in the first set and it was tied nine times, the last at 13-all. UNK then scored six straight points to seize control and went on take the 25-17 victory.

UCO fell behind 7-3 in the second set before rallying to take a 13-12 lead on Kaaiohelo's solo block. Again the Lopers responded, ripping off seven unanswered points to move in front 19-13 before closing out a second straight 25-17 win.

UNK jumped on top 9-4 in the third set, but the Bronchos came back with a 9-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. Kaaiohelo had four assisted blocks and Jenkins three in that stretch.

UCO up 20-15 when the Lopers answered once more, ending the set with a 10-1 run to close out the sweep.

Central is home again Saturday, hosting Fort Hays State at 3 p.m.
