Bronchos Fall At Home To Missouri Southern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team lost 104-82 to Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon. UCO moves to 8-9 overall and 1-7 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. 

"We knew they would be a tough matchup." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "We let them have too many second chance points and fouled too much in the paint. We will get back in the gym, work on these thing and get ready for the next one."

Adarius Avery led the Bronchos with a double-double. He had 23 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. The senior also added six assists and went 7-for-11 from the free-throw line. 

Ashford Golden added 22 points and five rebounds. Jordan Hemphill had 11 points and Dashon Bell had eight. 

UCO shot 41.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the free-throw line. Despite the loss, they continue to knock down free shots, averaging 76.2 percent from the line. 

The Bronchos came out in the first half with a 5-0 run to start the game. Marquis Johnson started it out knocking down a three-pointer. The next possession Golden hit a jumper. The Lions came down and took it into the paint, drawing the foul and scoring both free-throws. Missouri Southern began to full-court press the Bronchos, forcing a turnover which led to a layup by the Lions. 

UCO got a big dunk from Alex Ogunseye to push its lead to 7-4, but allowed the Lions to score a layup then knock down a three to take the lead that the Bronchos would never regain. The Bronchos got within six in the first half with about 11 minutes to go when Johnson knocked down a three at the top of the key. MSSU then answered with a three from their big man. the Lions led by as many as 20 in the first half.

Avery almost had a double-double in the first half with nine points and ten rebounds. The Bronchos shot 41.7 percent from the field and only 33.3 from the three-point line. 

The second half started off with MSSU taking it straight to the basket and drawing the foul, knocking down both free-throws. UCO answered with a three from Bell. The Bronchos chipped MSSU's lead to just 12 when Jordan Hemphill scored both free-throws after drawing the foul on a layup in the paint. That is the closest the Bronchos would get to the Lions.

The Lions continued to score big shots extending the lead to 20 with 12 minutes left in the game. UCO wasn't going to give up on chipping that score. They shortened that to a lead of 14 from a three-point field goal from Jaylan Williams. The Bronchos were just down too many and couldn't play catch up. MSSU extended their lead to as many as 27 in the second half. 

The Bronchos are back in action on the road next week, facing Lindenwood on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. and at Lincoln on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3:30 p.m. In two weeks, UCO will come back at home to host Southwest Baptist on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Central Missouri on Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
