Bronchos Ousted In Overtime

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma fell to Lindenwood in an overtime nail-biter 85-80 Thursday night. The Bronchos move to 8-10 overall and are now 1-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

"This was an incredibly tough loss for us." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "We had the lead at the end of the second half but let them get back into it. And then we just couldn't get it done in overtime."

Josh Holliday led the Bronchos with 22 points off the bench. The senior shot 88 percent from the field and went 4-4 from the three-point line. Adarius Avery had a double-double on the night with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Jordan Hemphill added 11 points and Dashon Bell had 10.

UCO shot 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line and 36 of the Bronchos points were off the bench. The UCO defense forced 10 Lion turnovers.

Lindenwood won the tip to start the game and then went on a 5-0 run in the first two minutes. Marquis Johnson started out the scoring for the Bronchos with a jumper from the top of the key to make it 5-2. UCO started out the game rushing shots and allowing the Lions to get easy buckets in the paint.

The Lions led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Holliday would be the one to bring the Bronchos back into the game. He knocked down a big three with about six minutes left in the first half to push the score to 29-27 in favor of the Bronchos. Lindenwood would take it down the court and turn it over, giving Bell the steal who dished it to Holliday again for a fast break layup to go up by four.

The half continued to go back and forth in the last two minutes. The Bronchos had a two-point lead with 20 seconds left, trying to get the last shot up. Jordan London put up a long three and allowed the Lions to get the rebound on the missed jumper. Lindenwood came down the court with one second left in the half and knocked down a 3-pointer close to the half court line to retake the lead at halftime, 40-39.

The second half went a lot like the first, going back and forth for both teams. Lindenwood led most of the half until 10 minutes left when Hemphill drove into the paint, scoring the layup and drawing the foul, knocking down the free-throw, giving UCO a two-point lead. The Bronchos then forced a Lion turnover and Bell took it on the fast-break knocking down the layup to go up 61-57.

With 12 seconds to go in the second half, the Lions had to foul to get UCO to the free-throw line. Hemphill knocked down both and pushed to score to 76-73. Lindenwood continued to push, knocking down a three-pointer to tie the game with just six seconds, and ultimately force overtime at 76-76.

Overtime was scoreless until two and a half minutes to go when Golden knocked down a jumper to put UCO up by two. This would be the last time UCO led the game. The Lions continued to get in the paint and score or draw the foul. It went back and forth, and the closest UCO got again was with one second left in the ballgame when London tipped one in. It just wouldn't be enough to catch up to the Lions.

The Bronchos are back in action on the road on Saturday, Jan. 26 against Lincoln at 3:30 p.m. They will then head back home for two games. UCO will face Southwest Baptist on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Central Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
