Bronchos Fall To Pittsburg State

EDMOND (Jan. 17) – Long-distance shooting success for one team and lack of it for another told the tale in Central Oklahoma's 90-74 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association loss to Pittsburg State Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Gorillas knocked down a school-record 16 treys – several from the 25-foot range – in 38 attempts (42.1 percent), while the Bronchos made just 2-of-18 tries (11.1 percent) from beyond the arc, with one of those coming in the final seconds after the outcome had been decided.

Central fell to 8-8 overall and 1-6 in the league with the loss, while PSU improved to 13-3 and 6-1.

"They're a really good 3-point shooting team and showed it tonight," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "They made a lot of long shots when I thought we played pretty good defense on them.  We obviously didn't shoot it very well, but we were still in the game until the last five or six minutes when it got away from us."

The Bronchos took their only lead of the game at 58-57 with 12:56 left to play on two Marquis Johnson free throws, but PSU went back in front to stay 16 seconds later with one of its 3-point daggers.

UCO trailed just 70-67 after a pair of Adarius Avery foul shots at the 7:14 mark and then everything fell apart.  A flurry of missed shots, turnovers and fouls enabled the Gorillas to finish the game with a 20-7 run in pulling away.

Avery led the Bronchos with another double-double, finishing with 22 points and 12 rebounds while hitting 7-of-13 shots and 8-of-11 free throws.  Ashford Golden added 19 points and seven boards.

UCO also got 12 points and seven rebounds from Jordan Hemphill, while Dashon Bell chipped in nine points and seven caroms.  Central outrebounded the Gorillas 39-31 and committed just 12 turnovers, but PSU's 3-point accuracy turned the tide.

Donovan Franklin had seven treys in scoring 32 points to lead Pitt State.

Central fell behind 10-2 just three minutes into the game, but came back with a 10-2 run to tie it at 12-all on a Golden fast-break layup.  PSU answered with a 16-4 spurt to open up a 28-16 lead and it was still a 12-point deficit at 40-28 with 2:26 left.

The Bronchos managed to get within seven (43-36) by intermission and stayed in that range the first eight minutes of the second half before running off 10 unanswered points to take the brief 58-57 lead on Johnson's free throws.

UCO is back at home Saturday, hosting Missouri Southern in a 3:30 p.m. conference tilt.
