Bronchos Travel To Newman Wednesday

No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma resumes its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association schedule Wednesday when the Bronchos travel to Wichita, Kan. to take on No. 23 Newman.

Match-time is 7 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium.

UCO is 6-2 on the season and 1-0 in the league, while the Jets are 2-0 and 1-0.  The Bronchos have a dominating 13-0 lead in the series, including a 33-6 win last year.

"This will be a good match for us," head coach Todd Steidley said.  "Newman has wrestled well this year and they've got some tough kids in their lineup.  I think our guys are making good progress and we just need to keep working hard at getting better every day."

Central has four top-12 ranked individuals in its lineup, led by No. 2 Heath Gray at 184 pounds.  Brik Filippo (149) and Blake Berryhill (285) are both ranked 11th, while 133 Rio Zamora is 12th.

Gray, who started at Newman as a true freshman during the 2015-16 season before transferring to UCO, is 21-1 with 15 bonus-point wins.  He started the season 15-0 before losing in the finals of the Midwest Classic and has won six straight since that setback, with one of those wins avenging his lone loss.

Berryhill is second on the team in wins with 18 (18-7), which includes seven falls.  Fillippo is 16-3 and has won five straight, while Zamora has a 12-9 record.

Newman is led by Tyler Mies, who is ranked third at 157.  Mies, 133 Tyler Lawley, 141 Kevin Kissane and 149 Kameron Frame all won individual titles for the Jets at last weekend's Kansas Cup.

Here's a look at UCO's probable lineups for Wednesday's dual:  125 – Noah McQuigg, So. (10-6); 133 – Rio Zamora, Jr. (12-9); 141 – Will Steltzlen, Sr. (4-1); 149 – Brik Filippo, RS Fr.; 157 – Dayton Garrett, So. (11-8); 165 – Wyatt Jordan, Jr. (10-5); 174 – Devin Crawl, Jr. (4-7); 184 – Heath Gray, So. (21-1); 197 – Colton Looper, Sr. (15-6); Hvy – Blake Berryhill, So. (18-7) or Greg Wilson, Sr. (0-0).

The Bronchos follow Wednesday's match with a trip to Kearney, Neb. Saturday for the Midwest Duals.
