Second-set Rally Carries UCO Past Mountaineers

DURANT, Okla. (Aug. 31) – Taylor Bevis had three of her match-high 15 kills in the late stages of a frantic second-set rally that powered Central Oklahoma to a sweep of Western State Colorado here Friday morning on the first day of the South Central Classic.

The No. 19-ranked Bronchos prevailed 25-16, 30-28, 25-14, overcoming a 21-11 deficit in the second set en route to their fourth sweep of the young season.  UCO, now 4-2, returns to action at 2 p.m. against Texas Woman's.

"I was really proud of the way the team kept fighting in that second set after we got way down," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We had really dug a big hole for ourselves, but they didn't give up and battled back."

The Mountaineers scored eight straight points to break a 4-4 deadlock and go ahead 12-4 in that second set and appeared in control when the lead was 21-11.

But Central didn't flinch, going on a 9-1 run to get back in it.

Lauren Jenkins had two kills while Malia Kaaiohelo and Amanda Desch added once each as the Bronchos made it 22-20, with consecutive kills by Desch and Bevis tying it at 24-all.

Bevis had a pair of kills in helping UCO take leads at 25-24, 26-25, 27-26 and 28-27, but Western tied it each time to stay alive.  The Bronchos finally went ahead for good at 29-28 on Karyn Chrisman's kill before an attack error by the Mountaineers ended it.

Bevis finished the match with 15 kills and just one error in 23 attacks in hitting .609 while adding seven digs and two assisted blocks.  Central hit .361 as a team, committing just 13 errors in 97 attempts with 48 kills.

Jenkins ended up with seven kills, Haley Deschenes had five and Desch, Kaaiohelo and Jordan Spence added four apiece.  Dominique Lipari led the team in digs with 12, McKenzie Fyfe had 19 assists and Ericka Scholl had 15 assists with three aces.

The Bronchos trailed 9-8 in the first set before scoring five unanswered points to take the lead and then pulled away from there.  UCO hit .483 with 17 kills and three miscues in 29 attempts in the opening set.

Bevis had three kills and a block in jumping on top 7-1 in the third set and Central cruised in from there to close out the match.
