Heard Sets Record As UCO Stays Alive In MIAA Tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 27) – Morgan Heard became Central Oklahoma's all-time hits leader and the Bronchos clipped Missouri Western 3-1 to stay alive in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex here Friday morning.

UCO banged out 10 hits in the victory, but left 13 runners on base – stranding at least two every inning – and were never able to put the game away.  The Bronchos improved to 31-21 and will face Northwest Missouri in another elimination game at 1:30 p.m.

Heard had two hits in setting her fifth school career record.  The senior standout tied the mark of 300 with a second-inning run-scoring single and then surpassing Kaylee Brunson's record with a fourth-inning single.

Peyton Walker and Jayden Chestnut teamed up in the pitching circle to limit the Griffons to five hits.  Walker started and went the first four innings, giving up four hits and one run to earn the win while Chestnut tossed three one-hit innings in earning the save.

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in their first at bat of the game on JoBi Heath's NCAA Division II-leading eighth sacrifice fly of the season.  Walks to Bailey Thompson and Heard along with Carrie Abrams' single loaded the bases for Heath, whose long fly out to right field easily scored Thompson.

UCO added another run in the second after again loading the bases as Thompson and Carli Jones had hits and Casady Webb reached on a fielder's choice.  Heard then tied the hits record with an RBI single to left field to make it 2-0.

Missouri Western scored its lone run in the top of the third and the Bronchos answered back in the bottom of that frame.

Jones drew a one-out walk, sent to second on a fielder's choice and then scored on a throwing error after Webb's infield base hit.  That made it 3-1 and UCO came up with some key defensive plays down the stretch

The Griffons loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Heath snared a hard-hit grounder down the third base line and stepped on the bag to get a force out and end the inning.

MWSU opened the sixth with a hit before Jones and Webb made consecutive defensive stops.  Jones gloved a liner at first and stepped on the base to get a double play, then Webb made a running grab of a line drive for the final out.
