Bronchos Sweep Missouri Southern

EDMOND (April 20) – Morgan Heard added another school career record to her already impressive resume, Jayden Chestnut pitched a two-hit shutout and Central Oklahoma swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from Missouri Southern here Friday afternoon.

Chestnut tossed her fifth shutout of the season in a 4-0 first-game victory before UCO took the nightcap 8-2 as Peyton Walker gave up just three hits and one unearned run in six innings.  The Bronchos improved to 28-19 overall and moved into third place in the league at 16-8.

Heard set the fourth career school record of her fantastic career in the sixth inning of the opener with a solo home run.  The senior standout already owns all-time UCO marks for doubles (67), walks (76) and assists (516) – while also ranking in the top five in seven other categories -- and broke a tie with Kaylee Brunson for the top spot in runs with her 224th.

"We had a good day," head coach Cody White said.  "I thought we battled hard and did a lot of really good things.  Jayden and Peyton both pitched well, our defense was solid and offensively we made a few things happen."

Chestnut was dominant once again in the opener as she threw her fifth shutout of the season and didn't allow a runner past first base.  The junior right-hander gave up singles in the first and sixth innings, retired 11 consecutive batters during one stretch and struck out eight while walking one in improving to 15-5 with her 15th complete game in 20 starts.

The Bronchos gave Chestnut the only support she needed in the bottom of the first and didn't have to do much at the plate to take a 2-0 lead, with their lone hit traveling just a few feet from home plate on Bailey Thompson's lead-off bunt single.

Lexy Dobson fouled off seven pitches before drawing a full-count walk after Thompson's hit before Heard and JoBi Heath also drew free passes to push across a run.  Carli Jones became the fourth walk of the inning with two outs to force in the second run.

Central extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Halley Randolph led off with a double to left-center field and scored on Dobson's two-out bloop single to center field.

Heard's line-drive rocket over the left field fence in the sixth gave her the runs scored record and made it 4-0.  It was the eighth homer of the season for Heard, who went 2-for-3 and also had the defensive play of the game in the fourth with a sensational diving stop behind second base to get an inning-ending groundout.

Walker gave UCO its second stellar pitching outing of the day in the nightcap, scattering three hits and allowing just one unearned run in six innings.  The senior right-hander walked two and struck out one.

Missouri Southern scored an unearned run in the top of the first to take its only lead of the day and it stayed 1-0 until the third when the Bronchos moved in front to stay with a pair of runs.

Thompson again got UCO started with a bunt single and she went to second on Dobson's sacrifice before moving to third on a wild pitch.  Heard drew a walk and stole second to set the stage for Heath, who lined a double to the right-center field gap to score both runs.

The Bronchos took control in the fifth with a two-out, four-run volley.  Randolph had the big blow in that frame with a two-run single, while Mo Selman added an RBI double and Casady Webb a run-scoring single as UCO's lead grew to 6-1.

Ritz had an RBI double and ended up scoring on an error in the sixth to make it an 8-1 cushion, with the Lions getting their final run in the top of the seventh.

Thompson, Heath, Selman and Webb had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit attack.

The Bronchos are scheduled to host Pittsburg State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday on Senior Day to end the regular season, though rain forecast may force those games to Sunday.
