Bronchos Drop Two at Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (April 17) – A Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association battle of the Centrals didn't go Central Oklahoma's way here Tuesday as the Bronchos dropped a doubleheader to Central Missouri.

UCO lost a 3-2 extra-inning decision in the opener and then managed just three hits in a 5-0 second-game loss.  It was the final road game of the regular season for the Bronchos, who fell to 26-19 overall and 14-8 in the league.

"We had a tough day," head coach Cody White said.  "I thought we battled hard in the first game and really gave ourselves a chance to win, but just didn't finish it off.  I don't think we did a very good job of putting that game behind us and let it affect our play on the field in the second game.

"We've got four games left in the regular season to get things turned around before the conference tournament.  I know what this team is capable of and hopefully we'll get it going."

The Bronchos finish the regular season this weekend with back-to-back home doubleheaders against Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State before the MIAA Post-season Tournament is held next week in Oklahoma City.

UCO was poised to take the first game after grabbing a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth when Allie Eicher drilled a home run over the right field fence.  It was the fourth homer of the season and the first since March 17 for the freshman.

But the Jennies had other plans in their final at bat.  A one-out single followed by a walk and another single tied the game, with a wild pitch allowing the winning run to cross the plate.

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in the second.  Tori Ritz had a one-out single up the middle, Carli Jones reached on an error and Halley Randolph singled to left field to load the bases for Bailey Thompson, who was hit by pitch to force across the game's first run.

Central Missouri used a two-run homer to go ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second and it stayed that way until the sixth when JoBi Heath led off with a base hit, went to second on Eicher's sacrifice and scored on Jones' two-out single to right field to tie it.

Eicher's solo blast broke that deadlock in the eighth, but the 3-2 lead didn't last.

Ritz and Morgan Heard had two hits apiece to lead UCO's nine-hit attack.  The Bronchos left eight runners on base, including five in scoring position.

Central didn't get a hit in the nightcap until Heath's single in the fourth.  Lexy Dobson and Ritz had the only other hits for Central, which suffered just its second shutout loss the season.

The Jennies scored twice in the second, once in the third and two more times in the fourth to build their 5-0 lead and ended the game with nine hits.
