UCO Sweeps Kearney

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma softball team swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader against Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon at Broncho Stadium, run-ruling the Lopers 10-2 in the first game before outlasting UNK 8-4 in the second game.

Central Oklahoma improved to 15-7 with the win and are 5-1 in league play. UNK is 4-15 and 0-2 following Friday's doubleheader.

"We played well today," UCO head softball coach Cody White said after the games. "I don't think we did great in any one spot, but we just got it done. We got runners on base and got them across the plate. We played pretty solid in the field too."

Central Oklahoma was paced in Friday's opener by Carrie Abrams. After being named MIAA Player of the Week earlier this week, the senior outfielder went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and a triple in the first game against Kearney. She also scored a run. UCO scattered nine hits in the game, Abrams had half of them.

Bailey Thompson, Morgan Heard, JoBi Heath, Tori Ritz, and Casady Webb all had one hit each. Thompson scored twice, as did Webb. Heard added a run and an RBI.

The Bronchos fell down 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but responded with two in the third, and four in a wild fourth inning.

Webb scored to tie the game 1-1 in bottom of the third after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Lexy Dobson would also score after she reached base on an error by the first baseman.

Janie Abrams (pinch-running for Ritz), Halley Randolph, Dobson, and Thompson all scored in the fourth to put UCO up 6-1. None of those four batters got on base with a hit. Ritz reached on a fielder's choice, Randolph drew a walk, Dobson reached on an error for the second time in as many innings, and Thompson did too.

Central added four more in the bottom of the sixth to earn the run-rule.

Webb led off with a single after hitting a missile back at the pitcher. She scored, along with Thopmson behind her, when Abrams belted a triple to right center. Heard hit an RBI single to score Abrams, and after Heath got on with a single, Allie Eicher hit a walk-off fielder's choice. With runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the sixth, Eicher hit a hard ground ball to first. The throw home wasn't close and Heard scored the game-winning run.

In the second game, UCO scattered 10 hits. Heard and Heath led the team with two apiece. Eight different Broncho batters recorded one hit.

Heard's lead-off triple in the bottom of the fourth spurred a four-run inning. Heath followed with a single to score Heard, Eicher walked, and Randolph was hit by a pitch. Carli Jones, the only player not credited with a hit in the game, reached on a fielder's choice.

Webb drew a walk to earn credit for an RBI. And Randolph scored on a passed ball after Dobson struck out.

Heard scored again in the fifth after singling, stealing second, and sprinting home on Heath's second single in as many innings.

Jayden Chestnut earned the win in Game 1. She threw a complete game, striking out eight in six innings. She allowed five hits and two earned runs. Chestnut moves to 9-3 on the season.

Lauren Gibson got the win for Game 2, throwing five innings. She allowed nine hits and four earned runs. Chestnut came on to close, getting six-straight outs in two innings of work.  Gibson is 6-3 this season.

The Bronchos are back in action Saturday, hosting Fort Hays State in an MIAA doubleheader at Broncho Stadium beginning at noon.
