Bronchos Take Two From FHSU

EDMOND (March 10) – Jayden Chestnut pitched a first-game shutout while JoBi Heath had three hits and the save in the nightcap as Central Oklahoma swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon at Broncho Stadium.

Chestnut scattered six hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out two in a 2-0 win to open the day before the Bronchos banged out 14 hits – including eight for extra bases – in a 10-5 second-game triumph.  Heath went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and two doubles in that contest in addition to pitching the final two innings to earn the save.

UCO improved to 17-7 on the season and 7-1 in the league with its second sweep in two days.

"We didn't do much offensively in the first game and were fortunate to come out of that game with a win," head coach Cody White said.  "We swung the bats a lot better in the second, though it was a still a little ragged.  But we took care of business and did what we needed to do this weekend."

Chestnut needed just 82 pitches to notch her third shutout of the season.  It was also the 10th complete game for the junior standout, who improved to 10-3.

UCO scored the only two runs of the game in the second inning and both were unearned.

Allie Eicher started the frame by reaching on an error, then advanced to third on Halley Randolph's sacrifice bunt and Carli Jones' groundout.  Casady Webb walked and Lexy Dobson plated the go-ahead run with a single to right field, with Bailey Thompson's bunt single loading the bases before Carrie Abrams drew an RBI walk to make it 2-0.

The Bronchos finished with just five hits, getting two from Jones.

Central jumped on top in the first inning of the nightcap.  Thompson led off with a double and then scored on an error when Abrams reached on a bunt single, with Heath's run-scoring double to left-center making it 2-0.

The Bronchos erupted for six runs in the second to make it an 8-0 cushion.  UCO had four extra-base hits in the inning, including a two-run triple by Morgan Heard, a two-run double by Eicher and an RBI triple by Webb in addition to Heath's sacrifice fly.

FHSU scored four times in the fourth and once in the sixth to get within 8-5, but the Bronchos got RBI singles from Heath and Jones in the bottom of the sixth to stay safely in front.

Heath's 3-for-3 game led the 14-hit attack.  Heard had a pair of triples, Thompson two doubles and Dobson two singles.

Lauren Gibson pitched the first five innings to earn the win, improving to 7-3.  Heath moved over from her third base post to throw the final two innings, giving up two hits in picking up the first save of her collegiate career.

UCO returns to action next weekend at the Hy-Vee Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. with six games against Central Region teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
