UCO Drops Home Opener

EDMOND (Feb. 8) – The long ball was Central Oklahoma's undoing in Friday morning's home-opener against Rogers State.

The Hillcats smacked four home runs to account for all six of their runs in a 6-4 win over the Bronchos in the first game of the UCO/OC Festival being hosted by Central and near-by Oklahoma Christian.

UCO's lone homer was a two-run shot by JoBi Heath to highlight a three-run fifth inning that pulled the Bronchos into a 4-4 tie, but RSU broke that with a two-run blast of its own in the top of the seventh to claim the victory.

Central put the lead-off runner on in each of the first five innings and finished with 12 hits, but stranded eight runner in falling to 4-3.  The Bronchos return to action at 3:30 p.m. to face Southeastern Oklahoma.

The Hillcats had two solo homers and a pair of two-run blasts in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in their initial at bat with their first long ball.

UCO tied it in the second when Lexy Dobson reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on Carli Jones' bloop single to left field and scored on Casady Webb's line-drive double down the right field line.

Rogers went ahead with a two-run bomb in the fourth and made it 4-1 with a solo drive in the fifth, with the Bronchos tying it again in the bottom of that frame.

Bailey Thompson led off the fifth with a triple to right-center field and scored on Carrie Abrams' infield single before Heath's homer made it 4-4.  It was the first homer of the season for the junior slugger, whose high fly ball down the left field line stayed just inside the foul pole.

It stayed deadlocked until the Hillcats came through with their final long ball in the seventh.

Thompson, Abrams, Heath, Jones and Webb had two hits apiece to lead UCO's offense.  Jayden Chestnut took the pitching loss, her first of the season after a 3-0 start.
