Randolph Blast Sparks Bronchos

EDMOND (Feb. 8) – Halley Randolph smashed a pinch-hit grand slam in the fifth inning to catapult Central Oklahoma to a 9-6 come-from-behind victory over Southeastern Oklahoma Friday afternoon.

Randolph's towering blast off the scoreboard in left-center field capped a five-run fifth and the Bronchos overcame a 4-1 deficit in earning a split on the first day of the UCO/OC Festival.  Central, now 5-3 on the season, fell to Rogers State 6-4 in the first game.

UCO returns to action at 11 a.m. Friday against Southern Nazarene and is scheduled to finish the three-day event Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest against East Central, weather permitting.

"Halley really came through with a big hit for us," said head coach Cody White, who collected the 175th win of his five-year UCO career.  "She's been struggling a little bit at the plate so far, but she had a nice at bat and put a great swing on the ball.  It was a good win for us and I'm proud of the girls for bouncing back the way they did."

The Bronchos trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, but loaded the bases in that frame on JoBi Heath's double off the left field wall and walks to Morgan Heard and Allie Eicher.

Casady Webb's hard-hit grounder to shortstop plated one run and an error on the play pushed across another as UCO cut the deficit to 4-3.  The Bronchos then grabbed their first lead of the game in the faithful fifth.

Carrie Abrams started the fifth with a single up the middle, Heard followed with a bloop single to right and Eicher drew a one-walk walk to load the bases.  It was Webb's turn again and this time the junior's bloop hit found an opening in left-center field to score Abrams with the tying run.

Randolph then came on the pinch hit and uncoiled on a 3-1 pitch, sending it soaring high over the fence and off the scoreboard to give UCO an 8-4 lead.

SOSU got a run back in the sixth and the Bronchos answered that in their half of the inning on Webb's third RBI of the game, this one coming on a squeeze bunt.

The Savage Storm scored the final run on a solo homer in the seventh.

Heard went 3-for-3 to lead UCO's nine-hit attack, including a solo homer in the first.  It was Heard's third homer of the season and 35th of her storied career, moving her into sole possession of second place on UCO's all-time list.

Redshirt freshman Lauren Gibson went the distance in the pitching circle to pick up the win.
