UCO Picks Up Two Wins

LAREDO, Texas (Feb. 4) – Jayden Chestnut and Lauren Gibson picked up complete-game pitching victories to lead Central Oklahoma on the final day of the Texas A&M-International Festival here Sunday.

Chestnut went the distance in a 4-1 first-game win over Texas A&M-Kingsville and Gibson did the same in a 6-3 triumph over the host Dustdevils as the Bronchos finished 4-2 in the season-opening three-day event.

UCO had 20 hits on the day, collecting 11 in the opener and nine in the second.

"We played pretty well today, though we still left some runs out there," head coach Cody White said.  "Jayden and Lauren both did a great job.  It was good to get the season going and we learned a lot about what we need to work on."

Chestnut polished off a perfect 3-0 weekend against TAMUK.  The junior standout scattered four hits and walked just one batter in giving up a lone run while striking out five.

Carrie Abrams went 3-for-4 to lead UCO's 11-hit attack.  Halley Randolph and Casady Webb added two hits apiece.

The Bronchos broke on top early, going ahead 2-0 in the first when Abrams had a one-out double and Morgan Heard followed with a home run to left field.  It was the 34th homer of Heard's sensational career, moving her into a tie for second on the school's all-time list.

Webb belted a one-out homer to left and UCO made it 4-0 in the fourth when Randolph led off with a double and pinch-runner Natalie Seevers scored two outs later on Bailey Thompson's single to right-center field.

The Javelinas scored their only run in the fifth as Chestnut finished off a dominating weekend that saw her give up just 12 hits and four runs in 19 innings.

Gibson earned the first win of her college career in the second game as the redshirt freshman gave up six hits and three unearned runs.  The Dustdevils scored on a three-run homer in the seventh after a two-out error extended the inning.

UCO broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Heard and JoBi Heath led off the fourth with back-to-back singles, with Allie Eicher and Randolph delivering RBI base hits before Carli Jones drove in the third run with a fielder's choice.

Abrams, Heard and Heath started the fifth with consecutive hits to load the bases and two runs scored on an error to make it 5-0, with Lexy Dobson's sacrifice fly pushing across the final run.

The Bronchos finished with nine hits, getting two each from Heard and Heath.

Central makes its home debut Friday to start the three-day UCO/Oklahoma Christian Festival.  The Bronchos play two games Friday, then once Saturday and once Sunday in that event.
