Bronchos Split Two Games In Texas

LAREDO, Texas (Feb. 3) – JoBi Heath had three hits to lead the offense in an opening win and Central Oklahoma split a pair of games on the second day of the Texas A&M-International Festival here Saturday.

The Bronchos banged out 12 hits in beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-2 in the first game before being held to four hits in a 10-2 run-rule loss to the host Dustdevils in the finale.  UCO (2-2) plays the same two teams again Sunday to finish off the season-opening event.

"We played pretty well in the first game, but struggled in all phases in the second," head coach Cody White said.  "We've got to get some things figured out moving forward."

Jayden Chestnut picked up her second pitching win in as many outings in the opener, giving up four hits and one run while striking out three in five innings.  Redshirt freshman Lauren Gibson allowed one run in the final two innings to pick up the first save of her collegiate career.

Heath's 3-for-4 performance at the plate paced an offensive assault that also saw Bailey Thompson, Carrie Abrams and Morgan Heard get two hits apiece.

The Javelinas scored once in the top of the first inning to take a quick 1-0 lead, with UCO tying it in the second on Allie Eicher's two-out run-scoring single.

The Bronchos went ahead to stay in the second on Heard's RBI single and then scored twice in the fifth.  Heard led off that inning with her second hit of the game and eventually scored on an error, while Halley Randolph added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

UCO tallied its final run in the sixth and it was all Thompson.  The junior speedster led off with a single, quickly stole second and then scored on an error after stealing third.

TAMUK got its final run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough.

The Bronchos broke on top quickly against TAMUI as Abrams had a one-out triple and Heard followed with UCO's first home run of the season, this one a two-run shot to left-center field.

But the Dustdevils answered quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first before adding two in the second.  TAMUI scored four more in the fourth and UCO couldn't answer in the fifth, ending the game on the eight-run rule.
