Bronchos Split With OC

EDMOND (Feb. 17) – Jayden Chestnut pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener and Central Oklahoma split a doubleheader with near-by rival Oklahoma Christian Saturday afternoon at Broncho Stadium.

Chestnut scattered four hits in a 3-0 first-game triumph, with Bailey Thompson providing a clinching two-run single in the sixth inning.  The Eagles rebounded to win the nightcap 5-3, scoring all five runs in the fifth inning.

The Bronchos, now 8-4 on the season, are back in action Tuesday with a doubleheader at Southwestern Oklahoma.

"We left a lot of runs out there again today," said head coach Cody White, whose team stranded 15 runners in the two games.  "We're getting people on base, but just aren't doing a good enough job getting them moved around right now."

Chestnut stretched her scoreless streak to 13 consecutive innings in the opener, giving up four hits and three walks while striking out five in a 117-pitch outing to improve to 6-1.

Shortstop extraordinaire Morgan Heard had a key defensive play in the second with an OC runner on third base, making a diving snare on a hard-hit line drive to save a run, and Chestnut escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the top of the sixth with a fly out and two strikeouts.

Thompson was the offensive catalyst in the opener, scoring one run and driving in two more.

The junior outfielder tripled to lead off the first and later scored on a two-out error to put UCO on top.  It was still 1-0 in the sixth when Thompson drove a single up the middle to plate Casady Webb and Lexy Dobson, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Thompson and Allie Eicher had two hits apiece to pace an eight-hit attack.

The Bronchos also took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as Carrie Abrams reached on a one-out fielder's choice, stole second, went to third on Heard's long fly out and scored on a wild pitch.

That was the score until the fifth when the Eagles scored all five of their runs on five hits and a key error to go ahead 5-1.

UCO got two runs back in the bottom of that frame.  Thompson had a one-out single and ended up scoring when Carrie Abrams singled and went to third on an error, with Heard's sacrifice fly driving in Abrams to make it 5-3.

The Bronchos put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but weren't able to push across any runs.

Abrams had two of UCO's six hits.  Lauren Gibson took the pitching loss, while JoBi Heath came on in relief in the fifth and threw 2 2/3 shutout innings.
