Bronchos Slug Their Way Past SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Feb. 28) – Morgan Heard smacked three home runs, Carli Jones drove in seven runs and well-rested Central Oklahoma battered Southwestern Oklahoma twice here Wednesday afternoon.

The Bronchos -- playing for the first time in 11 days – rolled to 12-2 and 17-11 routs, finishing with 31 hits in the sweep.  UCO belted 11 doubles and six homers on the day, tying a school record with seven doubles in the nightcap.

"Our girls were ready to play today after the long break and I think it showed with our offense," said head coach Cody White, whose team improved to 10-4.  "We were really aggressive at the plate and it paid off for us."

Heard had one homer in the first game and two in the second, while Jones had four RBI in the opener and three in the nightcap.  Jones, Carrie Abrams and JoBi Heath each collected five hits on the day.

The Bronchos pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning of the opener to take quick control and scored in every inning en route to ending the game after five on the eight-run rule.

Abrams got the first inning started with a one-out bloop single, Heard followed with a walk and then Heath smacked a run-scoring double off the center field wall before Allie Eicher made it 3-0 with a two-run double down the right field line.

UCO added two runs in the second.  Jones led off with a single to right-center and came around to score on Abrams' double to center field, with the speedy Abrams racing home when SWOSU's center fielder bobbled the ball.

Heath and Eicher opened the third with back-to-back singles to set up Jones' two-run double to center field and Lexy Dobson followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it an 8-0 cushion.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the third, with Heard getting one of those runs back in the top of the fourth when she led off with a line-drive homer to center.

UCO extended the lead to 12-2 in the fifth with a pair of homers.  Jones had the first of those, blasting a two-run shot high off the scoreboard in center field, and pinch-hitter Mo Selman followed with a solo shot to left-center.

Jones went 3-for-3 with four RBI to pace a 12-hit attack, with Abrams, Eicher and Heath adding two hits apiece.  Jayden Chestnut picked up the pitching win, giving up one earned run while striking out two in improving to 7-1.

UCO wasted little time in jumping on top in the second game as well, once again starting with a three-run first.  Abrams got things started with a one-out infield single and Heard promptly belted a towering shot off the scoreboard, with Mo Selman adding an RBI walk later in the frame.

SWOSU answered with two runs in its first at bat, but the Bronchos came back with four in the second on two-run dingers by Heard and Eicher as UCO's lead grew to 7-2.

Heard drove a high fly ball over the left-center field fence for her third homer of the day – and 40th of her sensational career – before Eicher followed a Heath single with a line shot to right.

UCO scored four more times in the fourth, getting a two-run bloop single from Dobson and RBI doubles from Heath and Jones, but the Bulldogs scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth to trail 11-7.

The Bronchos appeared to break the game open in the sixth with a six-run outburst.  Abrams sliced a two-run double to left-center and Jones had a two-run single, while Heath and Bailey Thompson added RBI hits as the lead grew to 17-7.

SWOSU stayed alive with four runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth to make it 17-11, but the Bulldogs got no closer.

Heard drove in four runs, scored four and was one of three players with three hits as the Bronchos finished with 19 hits, the fourth-most in school history.  Abrams and Heath also had three hits, with Heath scoring four runs as well.

Eicher, Jones and Dobson had two hits apiece as everybody who went to the plate for UCO collected at least one hit.

The Bronchos begin defense of their Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title Friday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Emporia State.
