UCO Tames Lions In MIAA Tourney

EDMOND (Nov. 6) – Taylor Bevis knocked down seven kills in a dominating third-set performance that enabled Central Oklahoma to polish off Lindenwood in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 16-ranked Bronchos had to rally in all three sets before finally prevailing 25-23, 25-19, 25-20 for their 22nd sweep of the season. UCO improved to 27-6 in advancing to the semifinals, while the Lions ended the year 16-14.

Third-seeded Central will take on No. 2 seed Washburn Friday at 4 p.m. in Kearney, Neb., with the top-seeded and host Lopers playing fifth-seeded Central Missouri at 7 p.m.  The semifinal winners meet for the tournament title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday.

"It was a tough battle and we had to fight for everything we got tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We got behind in each set, but our girls never lost their composure and we found a way to come back each time.  It will be a big challenge this weekend and we're looking forward to it."

Bevis finished the match with a team-high 11 kills, collecting seven in 17 attempts in the deciding set.  Haley Deschenes had six kills, while Jordan Spence and Malia Kaaiohelo had five apiece.

Spence added five total blocks, with Bevis and Deschenes getting three each.  Ericka Scholl contributed 15 assists and three aces, McKenzie Fyfe had 15 assists and two aces and Dominique Lipari chipped in 13 digs and two aces.

UCO fell behind 11-7 in the first set, but answered back with a 4-0 run capped by a Spence block that made it 11-all.  The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way before a Deschenes kill, Fyfe ace and LU attack error put the Bronchos on top 23-20.

The Lions scored the next two points to get close, but a pair of Spence kills off Fyfe sets gave UCO the set.

Lindenwood jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set only to see Lipari serve up two aces in sparking a 6-0 run that put the Bronchos ahead 9-8.  Karyn Chrisman had three kills the rest of the way as UCO stayed safely in front to take command of the match.

Central had to make another comeback in the third set after getting behind 7-4.  It was still a 13-11 deficit when the Bronchos reeled off six unanswered points behind three Scholl aces and two Bevis kills.

That put UCO on top 17-13 and Deschenes had two kills and solo block down the stretch.  Fittingly the match ended on a Bevis kill as the senior standout smacked a hard shot down the middle to put an exclamation point on her final Hamilton Field House appearance.
