No. 19 Bronchos Sweep Southern Nazarene

BETHANY, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team beat Southern Nazarene 3-0 Tuesday night at the Sawyer Center, picking up the sweep in non-conference action.

The 19th-ranked Bronchos edged Southern Nazarene 25-15, 25-19, 25-14 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

"Jordan Spence played really well tonight, she was a true leader for us," UCO sixth-year head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We got good play from a lot of different players and that's what it is going to take for us moving forward."

Spence finished with eight kills and four blocks. She hit .467 on the night.

The Bronchos also got a big helping hand from Karyn Chrisman, who led UCO with 11 kills, and Allie Davis, who notched a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Malia Kaaiohelo also chipped in in a big way, sending home seven kills.

Dominique Lipari led UCO with 17 digs, and Jordan Cramer added 11. McKenzie Fyfe led the Bronchos with 34 assists.

UCO overcame a quick exchange of lead changes at the beginning of the match to build an early lead. Lipari served up an ace that forced an SNU timeout, then served up a second ace out of the timeout to give the Bronchos a 17-7 first set lead.

Chrisman put home her fifth kill of the set to give UCO a 25-15 first set win. Davis added four kills in the first set to help Chrisman give the Bronchos a kick-start.

Davis and Chrisman continued their solid play in the second set. Davis had four more kills, Chrisman had three, and the freshman Kaaiohelo made her presence felt, coming on strong with four second-set kills.

The Bronchos were slow out of the gate in the second, but were able to build an early lead thanks to Kaaiohelo. The Edmond native came into the match with Central trailing 6-4, but quickly landed two kills and a block assist with Alexis Washington to give the Bronchos the lead.

UCO led by as many as seven midway through the set, and though SNU made a late charge, Chrisman and Kaaiohelo landed back-to-back kills to give the Bronchos a 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

UCO jumped out to a lead in the final set, leading by as many as six early before Southern Nazarene came back to tie it 10-10. From there however, UCO cruised. The Bronchos soon built its biggest lead of the night, 11, with the final point.

Central Oklahoma is in the middle of a nine-game road trip to start the season. The Bronchos travel to Colorado for the next four matches. UCO plays Friday against Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines in Colorado Springs. The Bronchos then make a short trek to Pueblo from there to take on CSU-Pueblo and Newman.

UCO opens the home portion of its schedule on Thursday, Sept. 14 with the MIAA/GAC Crossover.
