No. 19 UCO Wins Two in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team picked up a pair of 3-0 wins in the 2017 Steel & Silver Classic Friday, beating both the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines.

"I was proud of the way the team fought today," UCO head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We were fortunate to win both matches in three sets, but it wasn't easy. The team handled themselves well today in going up against some good competition."

In the first match of the day, the 19th-ranked Bronchos took on host UC Colorado Springs. Central Oklahoma edged out to an early lead and never trailed in the first set, leading by as many as seven points a few different times before winning 25-21.

Taylor Bevis led UCO early and often. She jumped out to a dominating start, putting home seven kills in the first – her seventh was the 25th point for the Bronchos – and adding seven digs as well.

Bevis continued that play in the second set, where the Bronchos won 25-18. The junior had six more kills. UCO did trail in the second set, after building an early lead, the Bronchos fell behind 7-6 on an attack error by Bevis. But a recovery was swift and when back in the lead, UCO again never looked back.

UCO led in the final set 4-0, and it looked like the Bronchos were ready to make quick work of UCCS. But the Lions recovered, and took a lead 6-5. Colorado Springs would lead by as many as three in the final set, including being up 22-19.

The Bronchos, trailing late, got some help from a pair of freshmen to finish off the point, and the match. Down 23-22, Malia Kaaiohelo earned her fourth kill of the match to tie it up. Then, Ericka Scholl served up an ace to give the Bronchos the lead. With Scholl serving again, UCCS had an attacking error that ended the match and gave the Bronchos a win to start the tournament.

Bevis finished the first match leading the way with a double-double of 17 kills and 11 digs. Davis, and Jordan Spence, each added eight kills for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma took on the 22nd-ranked Colorado School of Mines in the nightcap Friday. The Bronchos were again faced with tough tests throughout the match. But Bevis continued to provide a solid presence for the Bronchos in each and every test.

Bevis had five kills in the first set, as did Davis. The Bronchos hit .222 in the opening frame to grab a 25-21 first set win and an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Alexis Washington also played a key role for the Bronchos in the match. The senior – the lone senior on the UCO roster – had four kills on the night and five total blocks. She had three blocks in the first set to spark the Bronchos.

UCO won the second set 25-22. CSM played a solid attack in the second set too, landing 20 kills and hitting .326 in the frame. But again, the Bronchos were there to respond.

Central led early, grabbing a 9-4 lead rather quickly into the set, and going up 17-9 not much long after. With each response though by CSM, the Bronchos responded with another push. UCO never trailed in the set and ended with a win following two attacking errors by Mines.

In the third set, the Bronchos jumped out to a big lead early, and kept the pedal down. UCO led 7-2 early, 18-10 midway through the match, then following a dominating kill by Washington, the Bronchos took a 25-18 win in the set and the match.

Bevis had 16 kills in the second game of the day, 33 in two matches. Davis, Spence, and Kaaiohelo each added six kills to help.

McKenzie Fyfe was big in both matches. She had 30 assists in the first win, and 28 more in the second.

The Bronchos are in Colorado for another day. UCO heads to Pueblo, Colo. to take on CSU-Pueblo at 11 a.m., then matches up with Newman (Kan.) at 3 p.m.
