Bronchos Oust Washburn in OT

TOPEKA, Kan. – Mikayla Lowery scored a 96th-minute golden goal for the University of Central Oklahoma Friday night to propel the Bronchos to a 3-2 extra-time win over Washburn in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

The Bronchos (5-4, 2-0) played overtime for the first time this season, but only needed 5 1/2 minutes before Camrie Hurst found Lowery for the game-winning sudden death goal.

"We really had to fight for this one," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "Washburn is a good team and they got us a couple of times. But I'm proud of the way the whole team fought. They fought early when we were down, and they didn't give up in the end. That was a great team win tonight."

Lowery now leads UCO with five goals on the season, and has an incredible .889 shots-on-goal percentage.

Washburn struck first Friday, and held control for most of the first half, out-shooting the Bronchos 4-2. Rebecaa Weimer scored in the 35th minute to give the Ichabods the early 1-0 lead. The game remained that way until the second half.

That's when UCO took control. Asha Haile scored in the 57th minute off a cross from Morgan Cherry to level the match, 1-1.

Ten minutes later, Falyn Dodd notched her second goal of the season on a cross from Katie Killion to give the Bronchos a 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes to play.

UCO took 13 shots in the second half as it seized control of the game.

However, Washburn then took its turn to equalize, scoring in the 80th minute to make it 2-2. The teams held it that way for the final 10 minutes of regulation.

The Bronchos though kept up the pace, getting three shots off in overtime in just a span of 5:16. The third shot was the last though, as it sent the Bronchos to their fourth consecutive win.

Junior keeper Ally Salls played all 90 in net for the Bronchos, making three saves on the night. UCO finished with 18 shots on the night, 14 on goal. Lowery took three shots, all on target. Haile took six shots, five on target, and Cherry also took three shots, putting two on target. Five other Bronchos took a shot as well Friday night.

The Bronchos are just getting started on a four-game road swing in their schedule. UCO plays at Emporia State on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m.
