Bronchos blank Bearcats

EDMOND – Kentia Kokis scored two goals, and five other Bronchos found the back of the net as the University of Central Oklahoma shellacked Southwest Baptist 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field in the first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association match of the season for UCO.

The Bronchos got on the scoreboard in just over 11 minutes of play, and never looked back, cruising to the conference win against a team it beat 9-2 last Sunday.

"The team is starting to click together on both offense and defense and putting in a 90-minute performance," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "Everybody played well today, and I was happy to get to play just about everybody."

Cook sent 27 different players onto the pitch.

Central never faced a challenge Sunday. The Bronchos outshot Southwest Baptist 19-4 overall, and 14-3 in putting shots on goal. Ally Salls made three first-half saves to keep a clean sheet. Katrina Ortiz played just over 30 minutes to finish off the first shutout of the season for the Bronchos.

Asha Haile scored the first goal of the game, slipping home a close-range shot from inside the penalty area on a pass from Samantha Mickle in the 12th minute. Meredith Wilson tallied her first career goal, knocking in another shot from inside six, this time off a corner from Kelsie Eason in the 17th minute.

Just 20 minutes off the clock, Kokis sent a cross in toward the Southwest Baptist goal, and it ended up being the perfect shot. The ball sailed just high enough that the SBU keeper couldn't jump up to save it, and it dropped into the back of the goal to give UCO a 3-0 first-half lead.

The Bronchos went to the half with the same lead. UCO took 11 shots in the first 45 minutes, putting eight on target.

It didn't take long in the second half for the Bronchos to keep up the pace, and when UCO struck, it went for the kill.

Kokis scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 53rd minute. Haile beat her defender on the left side of the box, and chipped a pass over the goalkeeper's head to Kokis on the other side of the goal. Kokis punched in the score.

Mere moments later, the Bronchos pressuring again, Camille Greer found the ball with room to work on the right side of the box about 20 yards out. Greer made a quick move, then fired a shot and put home the fifth goal of the afternoon in the 54th minute.

Still pressuring, Morgan Cherry chipped in a close-range shot on a cross from Danielle Lorson to make it 6-0 in the 58th minute. Cherry's fourth goal of the season was the third Broncho score in a five minute span.

Mariah Moore put the final point on the board. As the clock approached the 67th minute, Southwest Baptist's goalkeeper darted for a ball near her own corner. She cleared it, but left her net wide open. Moore received the clearance, settled the ball, and fired a laser of a shot from around 40 yards out to make it 7-0.

Central Oklahoma now takes a three-game winning streak on the road. The Bronchos will play at Washburn and Emporia State next weekend, and two more road matches the following weekend before returning to Tom Thompson Field the second weekend of October.
