Bronchos ease past Missouri Southern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma beat Missouri Southern 3-1 Friday evening at Tom Thompson Soccer Field in the final non-conference match of the season for the Bronchos.

Central held a 1-0 halftime lead after Morgan Cherry scored her third goal of the season in the 38th minute. After Missouri Southern tied the game early in the second half, the Bronchos responded with goals from Camille Greer in the 57th, and Kelsie Eason in the 76th to pick up its second consecutive win.

"I like the way we responded today," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We've been able to score first in a few games this year, but then let it slip away when the other team ties it up. We didn't do that today, and that shows progress for all of us."

The Bronchos (3-4) outshot Missouri Southern 16-9 Friday. UCO put the pressure on the Lions almost the entire game, shooting seven times in the first half, and nine more after the break. The Bronchos also outshot Missouri Southern 11-3 on goal.

Cherry took three shots on the day, with the first getting the junior forward the game's opening goal. The Bronchos drew a corner kick as the clock entered the 38th minute. Eason took the kick and Cherry headed the ball in for the score from just in front of the right side of the goal.

UCO almost had a 2-0 lead when Mikayla Lowery put the ball in the back of the net on a pass from Eason. But Lowery was ruled offside and the goal wiped off the board.

Missouri Southern's Jessica Edwards scored the Lions' lone goal on a laser of a shot from about 35 yards away in the 52nd minute to level the match. The Bronchos were quick to respond.

UCO had another corner, and the ball was bouncing around a swarm of players near the top of the box. Cherry almost had another shot, but Missouri Southern corralled it and tried to clear the ball away. That's when Greer found it at her feet, balanced herself, and fired a laser shot of her own from about 25 yards out. Southern's keeper couldn't get a touch on it, and the shot hit the top cross bar, bouncing down, then backward for the score.

Eason was active with the ball all afternoon. It was only a matter of time before she had her chance to score.

In the 76th, the freshman forward got the ball and only had a 1-on-1 with a defender in front of her. Eason went left to right and right to left to get the backpedaling defender off balance. As soon as she beat the defender, Eason took her shot and slid in her team-leading fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1.

Ally Salls played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos Friday. She made a spectacular save in the first half when Edwards almost snuck another shot in the top center of the goal. Salls made two saves on the day, as the Broncho defense thwarted nearly every attack Missouri Southern put together.

The Bronchos are home again Sunday, and will open Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a 1 p.m. contest against Southwest Baptist. Central beat SBU 9-2 last Sunday.
