No. 18 UCO Splits On Day Two In Texas

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma split a pair of matches on the second and final day of the TexAnn Invitational at Tarleton State Saturday. UCO beat Midwestern State 3-1 before falling to host TSU 3-0.

"We did well in the first match," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We were able to get some things that we wanted. But we were lacking in the second match. Hats off to Tarleton State, they are really good team."

The Bronchos return from their season-opening trip south with a 3-1 record. UCO beat Henderson State and Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday. Central plays at Southern Nazarene next Tuesday, Sept. 5 in Bethany.

Saturday started strong for the Bronchos. Once Allie Davis gave UCO a 4-3 lead in the first set against Midwestern State, Central never looked back on its way to a 25-17 win. Davis had four kills in the opening set on seven attacks.

MWSU did put up a fight though, leading most of the second set. Midwestern held a 1-0 lead, a 5-1 lead, and even a late 20-15 lead. But the Bronchos responded well to the adversity. UCO went on a 10-2 run, with Davis putting the exclamation point on the second set with a kill that gave the Bronchos a 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Midwestern put it all together in the third set to steal a point with a 25-20 win. But again, the Bronchos were ready to respond.

Central jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set before MWSU battled back to take the lead midway through. But when a Davis kill gave the Bronchos a 19-18 lead, and then a 20-19 lead moments later, UCO finished off the match. Another Davis kill made it 23-20, then freshman Malia Kaaiohelo landed two kills to give UCO the 25-20 set and a 3-1 win in the match.

Karyn Chrisman led the Bronchos in the first match Saturday with 15 kills. Davis finished with 12. McKenzie Fyfe had a big game for the Bronchos, notching her third double-double in as many matches with 42 assists and 16 digs.

UCO ran into a bit of trouble with Tarleton State in the second match of the day. The host, and 25th-ranked team in the country exerted dominance over the Bronchos from the onset and won each of the three sets with ease, 25-18, 25-19, 25-17.

Taylor Bevis led the Bronchos in kills against Tarleton, notching 12, and adding a team-high 13 digs. Alexis Washington added eight kills and Davis seven. Fyfe had 19 assists and freshman Ericka Scholl added 10.

Following the conclusion of the TexAnn Invitational, the all-tournament team was announced. For UCO, Jordan Spence and Dominique Lipari were both named to the team.

UCO plays at Southern Nazarene at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sawyer Center in Bethany. Tickets are $6 at the gate.
