Bevis Shines As UCO Tames Lions

EDMOND (Sept. 18) – Taylor Bevis had six of her 22 kills during a stirring second-set rally that catapulted Central Oklahoma to a sweep of Arkansas-Fort Smith Monday night at Hamilton Field House in the final non-conference match of the regular season.

The Bronchos, who moved up to 10th in the NCAA Division II rankings earlier in the day, had to rally in the first two sets before cruising in the third for a 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 victory.  It was the 10th straight win for UCO, now 13-1 on the season.

Bevis was once again the driving force for the Bronchos.

Named MIAA Hitter of the Week hours before the match, the junior outside hitter had a .286 attack percentage in collecting her 22 kills.  Ten of those kills came in the second set, including six during a 16-4 run that enabled UCO to overcome a 12-4 deficit.

"Taylor is having a great season and we really needed her tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Fort Smith has a tough team and we knew it was going to be a hard match.  I was proud of the way the team didn't panic when we got behind in the first two sets and thought we showed a lot of resiliency."

There were seven ties and five lead changes in the opening set, with the Lady Lions taking a 14-10 lead at one point.  It was still a 17-15 deficit when UCO went on a 7-1 scoring spurt, getting kills from four different players in addition to a Callie Bangasser service ace.

That put the Bronchos up 22-18, with kills by Bevis, Alexis Washington and McKenzie Fyfe closing out the set.

UAFS jumped on top early in the second set and looked to be in control after grabbing a 12-4 lead, but Bevis had other plans.  Bevis -- who entered the contest ranked fifth nationally in kills per set with 4.77 -- knocked down six during a 16-4 surge that gave UCO a 20-16 advantage.

Ericka Scholl added two aces during that run and Bevis ended up getting her 10th kill of the set to close it out.

The Bronchos never trailed in the third set after taking a quick 3-0 lead.

Haley Deschenes had seven of her 12 kills in the first set and hit .500 for the match, while UCO also got five kills and five assisted blocks from Washington.  Malia Kaaiohelo added four kills and four assisted blocks.

Fyfe, who was named MIAA Specialist of the Week earlier in the day, handed out 34 assists in addition to making three kills.

It was the 20th consecutive home win – and 40th in the last 41 -- for the Bronchos, who open MIAA play Friday at Missouri Southern.
