Bronchos Drill Southwest Baptist 9-2 Sunday

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team put on a blistering pace from the opening kick, freshman Samantha Mickle recorded a hat trick, and the Bronchos pounded Southwest Baptist 9-2 in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos put up the fifth-most goals in school history in improving to 2-4 on the season.

"I was glad to see the team attack that way," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "We've been looking for some aggressiveness on offense, and we definitely found it today. Hopefully, this will show them what they're capable of and help us get on track moving forward."

Mickle entered Sunday's game in Bolivar with no career goals scored. She'd only played two of UCO's first five games though. Cook said he knew she was a threat to do what happened Sunday.

"She can really get after it," Cook said. "She takes a lot of free kicks for us, because she can put the ball in the right place. I'm happy for her to get her first goal, let alone three of them. I'm really happy for a few of the girls who scored their first goals."

UCO wasted no time finding the net Sunday. Senior forward Mikayla Lowery took a cross from Kentia Kokis in the third minute of the match and put home the game's first score. It was Lowery's fourth goal of the season, and maybe more impressively, just her fourth shot on goal of the season.

The Bronchos then kept applying the pressure.

Asha Haile tallied her second goal of the season in the 11th minute on a pass from Lowery. Then, in the 17th minute, Kokis again sent a cross right in front of the Southwest Baptist goal. This time, Kelsie Eason slotted home the goal – her third of the season – to give UCO a 3-0 lead.

Southwest Baptist added its first goal of the game in the 24th minute, but UCO didn't stall the attack.

Morgan Cherry, who came on in reserve action for Lowery, corralled a loose ball in front of the net and scored her second goal of the season after an SBU header went awry. Still in the first half, just moments before the break, Mickle netted her first career goal in the 44th minute. Eason added the assist and UCO took a 5-1 lead to halftime.

Southwest Baptist scored its second goal pretty quickly in the second half, making it 5-2 in the 56th minute.

Not to be outdone, UCO responded yet again, and did so in a flurry 10 minutes later.

Michelle Molen got in on the scoring festivities with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute. Molen got to the ball after a corner kick from Eason was knocked out of the box. The sophomore fired home her first goal of the season from 22 yards out.

Then, Mickle scored her second goal of the match before another minute could even tick off the clock and UCO led 7-2. Mickle took a cross from Lowery and beat the keeper to score.

Cali Walker then got on the board in the 77th minute, scoring on a rebound after the SBU keeper deflected a cross for her first career goal.

Mickle then found the back of the net for a hat trick in the 85th, scoring in similar fashion. After Falyn Dodd took a shot, Mickle found the rebound and put home her third goal of the afternoon to make it 9-2 UCO.

The Bronchos had season highs in shots (22) and shots on goal (17). UCO assisted on five of its nine goals scored Sunday.

What might be the best news of the day for the Bronchos is that Cook had seven different players score a goal.

Kaitlyn Asher played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos. The freshman made one save, and only faced three shots on the day.

Central Oklahoma is home next week. The Bronchos host Missouri Southern on Friday at 4 p.m. at Tom Thompson Soccer Field. UCO then sees Southwest Baptist again next Sunday at 1 p.m.
