Bison No Match For UCO

EDMOND (Sept. 15) – Balanced offense led Central Oklahoma to another runaway win in the MIAA/GAC Crossover Tournament Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

Four players had at least seven kills as the No. 13-ranked Bronchos completed a two-day, four-match sweep in the tournament with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-16 battering of Oklahoma Baptist.  UCO moved to 12-1 on the season with its ninth straight victory.

Malia Kaaiohelo and Alexis Washington had eight kills apiece, while Jordan Spence and Taylor Bevis had seven each to pace the spread-out attack.  Washington and Spence both hit .500 in the match.

The Bronchos also collected nine service aces, getting two each from Spence, McKenzie Fyfe and Jordan Cramer.  Fyfe also shined defensively with 16 digs in addition to handing out 28 assists.

"It was a good two days for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We were glad to finally be playing at home and I think that showed.  There's obviously still a lot of work to be done, but I like the way this team is progressing."

UCO fell behind early in the opening set and was down 10-6 before Spence sparked a 9-1 run with back-to-back aces.  That put the Bronchos in front 15-11, with two kills each by Kaaiohelo and Allie Davis helping close out the set.

Spence had four kills and Washington three in the second-set victory, with two emphatic Kaaiohelo kills early in the third set helping UCO grab a quick 7-1 lead en route to closing out the match.

The Bronchos, playing their first home matches after starting the season with nine straight on the road, have now won 19 consecutive outings and 39 of their last 40 at Hamilton Field House.  UCO will be home again Monday to host Arkansas-Fort Smith at 6 p.m.
