UCO Rolls Over Bulldogs

EDMOND (Sept. 14) – No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma had a season-best .377 hitting percentage in blitzing Southwestern Oklahoma in the second match of the MIAA/GAC Crossover Tournament Thursday evening at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos racked up 49 kills with a mere six errors in 114 attacks in rolling to a 25-11, 25-19, 25-12 sweep for their seventh straight win.  UCO improved to 10-1 in stretching its home winning streak to 17 straight and will play twice again Friday, meeting East Central at noon and Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m.

"I thought we did a great job running our offense tonight and McKenzie (Fyfe) distributed the ball extremely well," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We found the holes in their defense and our hitters were really aggressive."

Fyfe handed out 40 assists from her setter position while adding 12 digs and two kills.  Junior All-American Taylor Bevis hit .340 and had a match-high 17 kills – giving her 41 on the day – to go along with 10 digs.

Jordan Spence and Haley Deschenes didn't have an error in combining for 14 kills in 23 attempts.  Spence had nine kills in 16 attacks for a .562 attack percentage, while Deschenes hit .714 with five kills in seven tries in seeing her first action of the season.  Dominique Lipari (15 digs) and Callie Bangasser (10) helped lead UCO's defensive efforts.

Bevis had seven kills in the first set as the Bronchos quickly took control of the match, with Fyfe on serve as UCO scored the final eight points in the lopsided 14-point win.

The second set was more of a battle with eight ties and four lead changes, the last coming when a SWOSU service error gave UCO an 11-10 lead.  It was still close at 18-17 before Bevis and Alexis Washington had two kills apiece helped the Bronchos close out the set.

It was close again  early in the third set before UCO scored eight straight points – seven with Bevis on serve – in breaking away from a 10-all tie.  Deschenes had all five of her kills in the final set, as did Bevis.
