No. 13 Bronchos Win Home Debut

EDMOND (Sept. 14) – Taylor Bevis collected a season-high 24 kills and Jordan Spence came up big at the net down the stretch to propel No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma past intrastate rival Southeastern Oklahoma Thursday afternoon at Hamilton Field House in the 2017 home opener.

The Bronchos prevailed 19-25, 25-11, 25-20, 25-22 for their sixth straight win, improving to 9-1 on the young season.  UCO will be back in action at approximately 6:30 p.m. to take on Southwestern Oklahoma in the second match of the MIAA/GAC Crossover Tournament before playing two more matches Friday.

"We got off to a slow start and really struggled early, but I was happy with the way we bounced back from that," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Taylor, Jordan and Alexis (Washington) are our veteran leaders and they all stepped up for us."

Bevis hit a solid .254 in registering her 24 kills, knocking down five each in the first and fourth sets and seven apiece in the second and third.  The junior All-American added 15 digs and two assisted blocks.

Spence had 10 kills, four blocks and two aces, with all four blocks coming in the fourth set when the Bronchos turned an 18-17 deficit into the match-ending win.  Washington hit a sizzling .417 with 11 kills and just one error in 24 attacks to go along with five blocks.

UCO also got 45 assists and nine digs from McKenzie Fyfe, while Dominique Lipari had 22 digs and Malia Kaaiohelo seven kills.

The Bronchos extended their home winning streak to 16, though a string of 45 consecutive set victories ended with SOSU's 25-19 triumph to open the match.

UCO bounced back with the easy second-set rout, took control with the third-set win and then closed out the match with a come-from-behind effort in the fourth.

The Bronchos trailed 18-17 in the fourth when Allie Davis' kill down the line tied it.  Spence then took over as the 6-foot-1 junior middle blocker gave UCO the lead with a solo block, then teamed with Bevis and Fyfe for back-to-back assisted blocks and a 21-18 lead.

Another Spence solo rejection had the Bronchos up 23-18 before SOSU scored four straight to get close.  Spence's kill made it 24-22 and the match ended on an attack error by the Savage Storm.
