Bronchos Drop Opener in Texas

COMMERCE, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to open the 2017 season in non-conference action Friday against Angelo State.

The Bronchos surrendered two first-half goals, a third early in the second half, and were unable to come from behind a lead against Angelo. Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Asher made her collegiate debut in net Friday, and faced a tough onslaught of shots from an attacking ASU team.

"That's a tough way to start the season," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "We were able to some of the things that worked for us in the preseason, but we need to come together a little more. We'll have a tough contest on Sunday that we need to really focus on the gameplan."

The Bronchos outshot Angelo State Friday. UCO took 11 shots on the afternoon and put five on target. Angelo State took nine shots on the day, putting seven on goal. Asher made four saves in her debut.

Falyn Dodd, Asha Haile, Kelsie Eason, and Morgan Cherry all took one shot on goal, as did Callie McLaughlin off the bench. Dodd, Eason, and McLaughlin each took two shots on the day. Mikayla Lowery, Camrie Hurst, and Camille Greer also took a shot.

Angelo State put the first goal on the scoreboard just nine minutes into the action. Trenaday Scott scored on an unassisted strike from close range. Scott made it 2-0 in the 34th minute after scoring on a pass from Elizabeth Rodriguez. In the second half, Rodriguez made it 3-0 when she scored in the 53rd minute.

The Bronchos play Texas A&M Commerce on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Commerce, which is hosting UCO, Angelo State, and Florida Tech this weekend, is ranked 15th in the country in the USC Preseason Top 25.
