Capps Leads UCO Past Lopers

EDMOND (May 6) – Holden Capps pitched seven shutout innings and was supported by a pair of long home runs as surging Central Oklahoma cruised past Nebraska-Kearney 7-1 Saturday afternoon at sun-splashed Wendell Simmons Field.

Kyle Miskovsky and Brenton Washausen both smashed three-run dingers in backing Capps, who was superb in his seven-inning stint.  The hard-throwing senior left-hander scattered four hits and walked just one in gaining the win, improving to 7-4.

The Bronchos won their sixth straight – equaling their best streak of the season – in moving to 29-17-1 overall and 19-16 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  UCO tries to finish off a three-game series sweep of the Lopers at noon Sunday on Senior Day in the final home game of the season.

"Holden really threw well today," said head coach John Martin, whose team has guaranteed itself a spot in next week's MIAA Tournament.  "He was locating all his pitches and did a great job getting ahead of the batters.  We've got some momentum going now and just want to keep it up."

Capps went at least six innings for the ninth time in 13 starts and was never threatened.  He didn't allow a runner past second base, including in the sixth when UNK led off with a double before Capps responded with three straight strikeouts.

The Lopers drew their only walk to start the seventh, but Capps recorded his eighth strikeout and then got back-to-back fly outs to end the inning and wrap up his 111-pitch outing.

J.D. Cameron pitched the eighth and Gaylon Viney the ninth to close out the game, with UNK scoring its lone run on a solo homer in the ninth.

Neither team did much offensively until UCO broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth on Miskovsky's sixth homer of the season.

Dayne Sommer led off that inning with a single to right field and Anthony Alvarez had one-out double to right before Miskovsky lofted a bomb over the left field wall to make it 3-0 and extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Washausen upped the lead to 4-0 in the fifth after he walked, stole second and third and then raced home when Sommer was caught in an intentional rundown between first and second base.

The Bronchos put the game away in the seventh.  Jake Dyer had a one-out single through the left side and T.J. Sparr walked to set the stage for Washausen, who blasted a high shot over center field for his fifth homer.

Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead UCO's nine-hit attack, while Dyer added two hits.
