Central Oklahoma opens 2017 season with doubleheader sweep

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Central Oklahoma opened the 2017 season Saturday with a pair of wins in a doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello.

The Bronchos (2-0) topped Monticello 2-1 in the season-opener, and followed with a 4-3 win in the second game.

"That's a good way to start the season," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Monticello is a really good team, they made the regional final last year, so it's nice for our guys to see we are capable of beating a really good team."

Holden Capps impressed in his debut for Central Oklahoma. The lefty from Lawton struck out four in a five-inning start. Capps, who was 11th in the country in strikeouts per game two seasons ago, allowed four hits and one run – unearned – in the win.

Jon Kamies, a returning All-American senior, singled up the middle in his first at bat of the season. Kamies recorded the first hit of the season for the Bronchos in the top of the second inning.

T.J. Sparr reached on a throwing error on the next at bat and Kamies moved over to third base. Then a Glen Reeves single to right scored Kamies to put the Bronchos up 1-0. Sparr also scored on the play, as a second throwing error cost Monticello another run.

Capps held the 2-0 lead through 4 2/3 before Monticello finally got on the board. Ben Wusterbarth threw 3 2/3 scoreless relief innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two. Gibson Russ came on with two outs in the ninth to record the final out and get the save.

SECOND GAME

Martin went with J.D. Cameron for the start in game two. Cameron started strong throwing three scoreless innings. He didn't allow a hit by any Monticello batter threw one trip down the lineup and had two strikeouts. And fortunately for the junior right-hander, the Broncho offense gave him a two-run cushion.

But Cameron hit a skid in the fourth, allowing a walk, three hits and two earned runs. Tabor Charles came on in relief to end the inning. Charles would only throw 2/3 innings on Saturday, but he got the win in the second game.

That was thanks to the Broncho offense.

Xavier Warren scored Anthony Alvarez on a sacrifice fly in the second to make it 1-0. Then Alvarez passed on the favor and scored Trae Smith on sac fly in the third to make it 2-0. With Charles taking over in the fourth and the game tied 2-2, the Broncho bats kept working.

In the top of the fifth, Justin Brown and Jake Dyer led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Kamies scored Brown on a groundout to short. Dyer ended the inning standing on third, but the Bronchos had retaken the lead.

Onto the seventh, and Brown and Dyer were working again. This time, after Brown was hit by a pitch, Dyer belted a shot down the left field line and Brown made it all the way around to score.

Monticello was able to get one back in the bottom of the seventh, but Russ came on again to pick up a second save of the day.

The Bronchos wrap up the three-game series with Monticello on Sunday at 1 p.m.
