Shooting Woes Hurt UCO In Loss To Ichabods

TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 23) – A first-half shooting slump put Central Oklahoma in a hole it couldn't dig out of and the Bronchos went on to drop an 81-70 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to Washburn here Thursday night.

UCO made just 7-of-26 shots (26.9 percent) – including only 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from 3-point range – in the first 20 minutes to fall behind 35-25 and never got closer than nine in the second half.  The Bronchos dropped to 15-11 on the season and 10-8 in league play, while the Ichabods improved to 18-7 and 10-8.

"We got some good looks, but just couldn't get the ball in the hole and defensively we didn't do a very good job," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "We just have to put it behind us and get ready for Saturday."

UCO ends the regular season Saturday at Emporia State, needing a win to clinch a home game for the first round of the MIAA Post-season Tournament that starts next Monday.

Marquis Johnson led the Bronchos with 17 points, five assists and four rebounds.  Corbin Byford added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Josh Holliday had 14 points.

Washburn shot 52.0 percent from the field and outrebounded the Bronchos 41-30.

The game went back-and-forth early, with UCO's last lead coming at 10-9 on a Johnson 3-pointer.  WU answered with a 10-0 run and led by as many as 13 (35-22) before the Bronchos scored the final three points of the half on two Johnson free throws and another by Cooper Clark to make it 35-25.

The Ichabods opened the second half with a 10-4 spurt to move ahead 45-29 and the closest UCO got after that was 68-59 on an Xavier Howard free throw at the 5:57 mark.  But Washburn reeled off eight unanswered points to push its lead to 76-59 and coasted in from there.
