Bronchos clip Hornets in season finale

EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team needed five extra minutes on its season finale, but still came away with an 83-76 win over Emporia State on Saturday.

The Bronchos finish the regular season 16-11 and 11-8 in conference play. UCO will get the No. 7 seed in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament and host 10th-seeded Emporia State on Monday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

Corbin Byford and Jake Hammond led the Bronchos Saturday. The two Broncho bigs each scored 20 points. Hammond had 20 on 9 of 14 shooting with eight rebounds. Byford got his 20 on 7 of 9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.

"That was a big performance for us for those two," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "Those two had to work really hard for their's tonight too."

Jordan London chipped in 13 for the Bronchos. London had a big offensive rebound and layup with three minutes to go to put UCO up 63-60. That started a fury of events down the stretch leaving everyone on the edge of their seats.

Emporia's Brandon Hall answered London with a layup of his own to make it a one-point game on the next possession. Marquis Johnson sank two free throws to put UCO up three with 1:50 to play. Emporia's Josh Pedersen made one of two free throws to make it 65-63 with 1:35 to play.

Johnson then hit a jumper with one minute left to put UCO up four. Then Emporia then made two free throws on separate trips to pull back with two.

After Hammond made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to make it 68-65, Emporia's Jay Temaat sank a 3-pointer with 5.3 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The Bronchos outscored Emporia 15-8 in the extra period to get the win.

Johnson finished with six points, Josh Holliday had seven. Cooper Clark had a big game off the bench, scoring nine, and Xavier Howard scored eight.

The Bronchos beat Emporia State in Edmond on Jan. 12. Monday's MIAA Tournament game will be the third meeting of the season between the two.
