Bronchos Overwhelm Southwest Baptist

EDMOND (Dec. 7) – Dominating interior defense and another balanced offensive attack led Central Oklahoma to an 83-64 romp over Southwest Baptist Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

Defense has been the UCO's forte this season and it was again in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association mismatch.  The Bearcats entered the game as the league's best 3-point shooting team and they had success from long range, hitting 9-of-17 attempts (52.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

But the Bronchos stymied SBU inside the 3-point line throughout the game, allowing just seven two-point buckets in 32 tries (21.9) percent while blocking a season-high eight shots.

That defensive success led to 7-0 run to open the game and seven players scored seven-plus points – with three in double figures – as UCO never trailed in upping their record to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

""Our strength is our inside play and our depth inside," Hankins said.  "I thought that we started out very well and played really good early.  We built a big lead and started to relax a little bit and sent them to the line a lot in the first half, but overall it was a really good night."

Corbin Byford led the Bronchos with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field with one 3-pointer while adding four rebounds and two blocked shots.  Phabian Glasco was also a terror inside the paint with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Marquis Johnson added 11 points, four assists and two steals and Josh Holliday hit three straight treys during a first-half shooting spree to contribute nine points.  Anthony Roberson, Marqueese Grayson and Kole Talbott scored seven points apiece.

Jake Hammond swatted away two shots despite playing just 12 minutes because of foul trouble, while Roberson and Talbott each had a block.

Central took control quickly, bolting to a 7-0 lead as Byford and Hammond converted back-to-back layups and Grayson drilled a 3-pointer.  The lead was 12 (20-8) by the midway point of the half on Holliday's long-distance bomb from the wing  and the junior sharpshooter drained two more treys in the next two minutes to help push the advantage to 16 (27-11).

Johnson's mid-range jumper with 5:05 left in the half had the Bronchos up by 20 at 36-16 and UCO led by 15 (43-28) at intermission.

SBU got within 12 on three occasions in the second half, but could never get any closer as the Bronchos coasted in with their third home win in as many tries.

UCO is back home Saturday, taking on No. 17-ranked and unbeaten Dallas Baptist at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
