Bronchos Roll Past Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Okla. (Dec. 30) – Jordan London and Josh Holliday drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to help stem a second-half Rogers State comeback and Central Oklahoma went on to a 68-53 victory here Saturday.

It was the final non-conference game of the regular season for the Bronchos, who improved to 10-3 with their fifth win in seven road games.

UCO never trailed and appeared in control after going ahead 43-30 early in the second half before the Hillcats scored 10 unanswered points to pull within 43-40.

That's when London and Holliday stepped up, with the junior sharpshooters splashing through consecutive treys – both off passes from Jordan Hemphill -- to quickly bump the lead back to nine at 49-40 with 10:05 left to play.  It was the only basket of the game for both players.

Rogers State never got closer than seven the rest of the way and the Bronchos led by as many as 20 before coasting in with their fourth win in five outings.

"Jordan and Josh hit a couple of big shots for us when we really needed them," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "That gave us a little breathing room and we did a good job of closing out the game from there.  It was a pretty good game for us overall, especially for not having played in awhile."

UCO – playing its first game since Dec. 19 – once again relied on stingy defense, limiting the Hillcats to 35.4-percent shooting from the field.  It was the sixth time this season that the Bronchos have allowed 60 points or less.

Central was efficient offensively, shooting 50.0 percent (28-of-56) overall while committing just 11 turnovers.  The Bronchos also held a 38-25 rebounding advantage and made seven steals.

Marqueese Grayson was the lone player in double figures, making 6-of-12 shots with one 3-pointer in a 13-point, three-assist performance.  Marquis Johnson finished with nine points, five rebounds and four assists and Phabian Glasco also had nine points.

Corbin Byford and Jake Hammond scored eight points apiece, with Hammond adding five rebounds and two blocked shots.  Anthony Roberson had a game-high eight rebounds along with six points and two steals.

The Bronchos never trailed after Johnson opened the game with a 3-pointer off a Roberson assist, though it was tied once at 5-all.  UCO then went on a 14-2 run to go ahead 19-7, getting four points each from Grayson and Roberson and a 3-pointer from Kole Talbott.

It was a 14-point cushion (28-14) on a short Byford jumper with 6:35 left in the half and the lead was 12 (37-25) at intermission.

Central led 43-30 three minutes into the second half when the Hillcats went on their 10-0 run to get close.  That set the stage for London and Holliday, who came through with their clutch shots to put the Bronchos back in control.

UCO returns to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action next week, hosting Lincoln on Thursday and Lindenwood on Saturday.
