UCO Routs Bulldogs In Home Opener

EDMOND (Nov. 21) – Corbin Byford scored seven points in a game-opening 14-0 run that gave Central Oklahoma a lead it never relinquished and the Bronchos went on to cruise past Jarvis Christian 79-59 Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

It was UCO's home opener after four straight road games to open the season and another suffocating defensive effort – especially in the early stages – set the tone for a third straight win by the Bronchos, who improved to 4-1.

Central harassed the Bulldogs into five turnovers and 0-for-10 shooting in the first seven minutes to grab the quick 14-0 lead as Byford had seven points and Anthony Roberson five.  The Bronchos limited Jarvis Christian to 31.7-percent shooting for the game.

"We started off really good and jumped on them, then kind of let up," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "One thing we've got to improve on is increasing our lead and not letting up.  I was happy with defense in the beginning.  It was a pretty sloppy night, but if we can play sloppy and win by 20 I'll take that every night."

All 12 players who saw action for UCO scored, with four making it to double digits.

Byford and Jordan Hemphill led the way with 14 points apiece, while Roberson added 13 and Marqueese Grayson 10.  Roberson also had six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Jordan London chipped in eight points, Marquis Johnson had six points and six assists and Jake Hammond had three points, three rebounds and three blocks.

Byford scored UCO's first two baskets from close range, throwing down a two-handed dunk off a feed from Roberson and adding a layup 38 seconds later.  Roberson had a one-hand jam and corner 3-pointer to push the lead to 9-0, with Johnson's driving layup and Byford's trey from the top of the key finishing off the starting run.

The first-half lead peaked at 22 when Hammond knocked down a pair of foul shots to make it 32-10 at the 6:06 mark and the Bronchos were up 16 (40-24) at intermission.

Jarvis opened the second half with an 8-2 run to get within 10 at 42-32, but Central pushed its cushion back to 22 (64-42) on London's corner 3-pointer with 9:14 left to play.

A rash of turnovers allowed the Bulldogs to trim the deficit to nine at 66-57 with 3:59 remaining before UCO ended the game with a 13-2 spurt to arrange the final margin.

The Bronchos are back in action at home Saturday, hosting Oklahoma Baptist at 3:30 p.m.
