Spence, Washington Fuel Bronchos

EDMOND (Nov. 10) – Jordan Spence knocked down a season-high 18 kills and Alexis Washington had a career-best 14 to lead Central Oklahoma to a hard-fought four-set triumph over Washburn Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

Four players collected double-digit kills in the regular season final as the No. 12-ranked Bronchos prevailed 25-17, 26-28, 25-23, 25-23 in a two-hour Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association battle.  It was the 28th win in the last 29 home matches for UCO, which improved to 28-4 overall.

Central finished the conference slate with a 15-3 mark and will be the second or third seed in the eight-team MIAA Postseason Tournament that opens next Tuesday.  The Bronchos will host a first-round match at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.

"We were expecting a tough match and that's exactly what we got," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a real battle with a lot of momentum swings, but we made some big plays in key situations.  Jordan was just about unstoppable out there tonight and really gave us a big spark."

Spence hit a robust .562 in the contest, notching her 18 kills in 32 attempts with no errors.  The junior middle blocker had seven kills in the crucial third set when UCO broke a 1-1 tie and put down all five shot attempts in the fourth set as the Bronchos closed out the match.

Washington -- who was recognized before the match as the team's lone senior -- hit .345 with 14 kills and four miscues in 29 attacks.  Taylor Bevis also had 18 kills along with 17 digs and Karyn Chrisman had 10 kills.

McKenzie Fyfe handed out 56 assists to go with 13 digs.  Dominique Lipari had a match-high 25 digs, while Callie Bangasser added 12 and Ericka Scholl 11.

Bevis and Washington had two kills each as UCO zipped to a quick 6-1 advantage in the opening set to take the lead, but the Ichabods answered back with the tight second-set win to even things at one set apiece.

Three straight Spence kills had the Bronchos on top 12-9 in the third set and it was a four-point cushion at 20-16 after a Washburn error before the Ichabods reeled off four unanswered points to pull even at 20.  It was tied again at 21, but an error gave UCO the lead for good and Washington had two kills the rest of the way.

Washburn overcame a series of five-point deficits to take a 23-21 lead in the fourth set in looking to extend the match.  The Bronchos then scored the final four points to end it, taking advantage of two WU errors while also getting a kill down the middle from Bevis and a match-ending combined block from Bevis and Spence.
