No. 12 Bronchos Roll In MIAA Tourney Opener

EDMOND (Nov. 14) – Jordan Spence continued her late-season surge to lead Central Oklahoma past outmanned Lindenwood Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House in the first round of the MIAA Postseason Tournament.

Spence hit .440 with 12 kills and one error in 25 attacks while adding six total blocks and a service ace as the No. 12-ranked Bronchos rolled to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 sweep in advancing to Friday's semifinals.

UCO, now 29-4 on the season and the third seed in the tournament, will take on No. 2 seed Missouri Western Friday in Kearney, Neb.  Top-seeded Nebraska-Kearney will face Central Missouri in the other semifinal, with the two winners meeting Saturday for the tournament title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II playoffs.

"Jordan really stepped up for us tonight and dominated at the net," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We didn't play great overall, but we took care of business and that's the main thing."

Spence -- named a first-team All-MIAA selection earlier in the day -- reached double-digit kills for the third straight time after having three in UCO's first 30 outings.  The junior middle blocker has hit .487 with 38 kills and just three errors in 78 attacks the last three matches.

Taylor Bevis was limited to eight kills, just the sixth time this season the MIAA Player of the Year failed to reach double figures, but she provided a team-high 16 digs along with three assisted blocks.

Karyn Chrisman and Alexis Washington had seven kills apiece, with Washington hitting .700 on the night.  Malia Kaaiohelo chipped in five kills, McKenzie Fyfe had 38 assists and nine digs and Dominique Lipari added 12 digs.

The first set went back-and-forth early before UCO used a 5-1 run to break an 8-8 tie and take the lead for good.  It was a three-point lead at 22-19 before Spence and Fyfe teamed up for a block and Spence followed with a spike down the middle to help close out the set.

The Bronchos never trailed in the final two sets, getting five kills from Chrisman in the second and six in 10 tries from Spence in the third.

LU was within 21-19 in the third, but Spence had three kills and Callie Bangasser a match-clinching ace the rest of the way as Central wrapped up its 29th win in the last 30 home matches.
