Late Comeback Lifts Bronchos Past Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 7) – Taylor Bevis knocked down seven of her career-high 30 kills in the fifth set and Central Oklahoma pulled off an improbable late rally to get past Washburn in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association barn-burner here Saturday night.

The No. 8-ranked Bronchos pulled out a thrilling 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13 victory in a two and one-half hour marathon match, scoring the last five points of the final set to land a new school record 17th straight win.

"I couldn't be more proud of my team for the way they battled tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a hard-fought match that could have gone either way, but we dug deep and found a way to get it done.  We made a lot of big plays at the end to come out with a great road win over a really tough opponent."

The Ichabods had UCO on the ropes in the final set after taking a 13-10 lead, but Bevis responded with back-to-back kills to force a Washburn timeout.  Alexis Washington and Malia Kaaiohelo followed the break with a combined block that tied it, a ball-handled error gave the Bronchos the lead and another Washington-Kaaiohelo block ended the drama.

Bevis' 30 kills led the way and the junior All-American added nine digs and five assisted blocks.  Jordan Spence had 13 kills and four assisted blocks, with Haley Deschenes chipping in 11 kills.

Washington hit .500 with nine kills and just one error in 16 attacks while also recording seven assisted blocks.  McKenzie Fyfe distributed a career-best 60 assists and Dominique Lipari came up big defensively with 23 digs.

It was the first five-set match of the season for the Bronchos, who improved to 20-1 overall and a league-best 7-0.

Washburn took a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set en route to taking the early lead in the match only to see UCO rebound in the next two sets.

There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the back-and-forth second set that saw the Bronchos overcome a late 22-20 deficit.  Spence sandwiched a Bevis kill with two of her own to give UCO the lead and Callie Bangasser's service ace made it 24-22.

The Ichabods stayed alive with a point before Bevis' eighth kill of the set ended it.

The Bronchos broke a 10-10 tie in the third set on a Bevis kill and never trailed again, with Bevis and Washington teaming up for consecutive blocks to close it out.

Washburn came back to take the fourth set and set the stage for the dramatic finish.

UCO returns home next weekend, hosting Missouri Western Friday and Northwest Missouri Saturday.
