Griffons End UCO Winning Streaks

EDMOND (Oct. 13) – A pair of long school-record winning streaks came to a screeching halt for No. 7-ranked Central Oklahoma Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos, who pulled out a dramatic five-set road win over Washburn in their last outing, were the victims this time as Missouri Western prevailed 19-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13 in a tense two and one-half hour Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association battle.

UCO had won 17 straight matches and 23 consecutive home outings before the setback, with the Bronchos having dropped just one set in the long home streak that dated back to 2015 before MWSU took three in one night.

"It wasn't our best performance, but we had our chances and just didn't get it done," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We were streaky all night and didn't play with the consistency we needed to.  It's a tough loss, but we can't get down about it and have to be ready to bounce back tomorrow."

UCO dropped to 20-2 on the season and 7-1 in the league, while the Griffons moved to 12-9 and 6-2.  The Bronchos are home again Saturday, hosting league foe Northwest Missouri at 7 p.m.

Taylor Bevis knocked down 27 kills to pace Central, while Jordan Spence added a season-high 14 and Haley Deschenes 12.  UCO was hampered by 23 attack errors and hit just .229 for the match.

Dominique Lipari was all over the court in repelling repeated MWSU attack attempts, recording a career-best 36 digs.  Callie Bangasser added 21 digs and McKenzie Fyfe had 10 to go along with 56 assists.

Deschenes scored three straight kills to break a 13-all tie in sparking the opening-set win as the Bronchos appeared poised to continue their winning ways, but MWSU jumped to a big lead early in the second to even the match.

Eight ties and four lead changes highlighted a back-and-forth third set that saw UCO finally take the lead for good at 18-17 on an Alexis Washington kill.  Bevis had five kills in the set, with Washington and Spence adding four apiece.

The Griffons responded by taking the fourth set to even the match again and then took 3-0 and 4-1 leads early in the fifth set.

Central rallied with seven straight points behind Spence's serve to move ahead 8-4 and the lead was 10-8 after a Bevis kill.  MWSU came back to pull even at 10-all and it was deadlocked again at 11, 12 and 13 before the Griffons scored the final two points to secure the upset.
