No. 8 Central Oklahoma Sweeps Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan. – Taylor Bevis landed 18 kills to spearhead the University of Central Oklahoma to a 3-0 sweep of Emporia State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action Friday night in White Auditorium.

"We got help from everybody tonight," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We needed that. It's always good when everybody can chip in and take the pressure off one or two people. Taylor and Jordan were big as usual, and did a great job leading us when we needed it."

Haley Deschenes added 11 kills, and Jordan Spence had seven kills and six blocks to provide a rounded-out attack for the Bronchos, who won their 16th consecutive match, 10th straight in sweeping fashion. Deschenes' powerful night may have come at a cost. The freshman hitter, who has been a big addition to the Bronchos right away this season, tweaked a recurring injury and is questionable for the rest of the weekend.

Alexis Washington threw in six blocks alongside Spence. Both had one solo and five block assists. McKenzie Fyfe paced the UCO offense with 32 assists on the night.

UCO jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, with two big kills by Bevis. Emporia did well to tie the set five different times, but after knotting it up 13-13, UCO made a push. Three straight kills by the Bronchos – Malia Kaaiohelo, Deschenes, Kaaiohelo again – and Emporia needed a timeout. Kaaiohelo finished with four kills in the match.

The Bronchos didn't hesitate to keep it up late in the first set, building a seven-point lead 22-15, before eventually winning 25-16.

UCO came out of the gate much slower in the second set, trailing 3-0, and 6-3 early in the set. The Bronchos put together a rally to grab a 7-6 lead before pulling ahead 10-7.

The Bronchos held a lead the rest of the way, pulling ahead by as much as 19-14 and 24-19 before a Washington block finished off the set 25-21.

UCO returned to jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set. Emporia though battled back again, and took an 8-6 lead before the Bronchos rattled off five straight points to take an 11-8 lead and force an Emporia timeout.

Emporia continued to fight, tying the match three more times before regaining the lead 17-16. An Emporia service error and a Spence, Deschenes block assist gave the Bronchos the lead again. The Hornets tied it 18-18 before another service error gave UCO the lead for good.

The Bronchos took a 20-18 lead on a Bevis kill, then earned a point on an attack error before Emporia called its final timeout. Spence picked up a block to make it 22-18. Bevis added three more kills to finish off the match and the Broncho sweep.

Central Oklahoma is back in action Saturday, with a 7 p.m. match against Washburn in Topeka, Kan.
