UCO Cruises Past Bearcats

EDMOND (Oct. 28) – Karyn Chrisman and Allie Davis combined for 18 kills and a robust .432 hitting percentage to spearhead another home shellacking for Central Oklahoma Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 13-ranked Bronchos steamrolled Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe Southwest Baptist 25-15, 25-8, 25-16 for their 10th sweep in 11 home wins.  UCO improved to 25-3 on the season and 12-2 in the league, staying in a tie for second in the standings.

Chrisman hit .571 with nine kills and one error in 14 attacks, while Davis hit .348 with nine kills and one miscue in 23 attempts.  Taylor Bevis, who leads the MIAA and ranks third nationally in kills, knocked down nine in just two sets as the Bronchos substituted early and often in the rout.

Malia Kaaiohelo chipped in six kills, Ericka Scholl had 23 assists and three service aces and Callie Bangasser contributed a match-high 14 digs.

"We were able to get a lot of players in the match and everybody played pretty well," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We used a lot of different combinations on the court, but I thought our players did a good job communicating."

Central started slowly, falling behind 2-0 and 3-1 in the first set before taking control with a 7-0 scoring spurt that featured two Scholl aces and two Davis kills.  That made it 9-3 and Kaaiohelo had four kills the rest of the way as the Bronchos cruised in with the opening win.

Bevis dominated the second set with eight kills, scoring four of UCO's first five points.  Chrisman had three kills in the set, which ended with the Bronchos scoring the final eight points.

It was Davis' turn to take over in the third set and the hard-hitting freshman delivered with seven kills, two of those coming in a 7-0 run that broke a 4-all tie and propelled UCO to the match-clinching victory.

The Bronchos go on the road next weekend for matches at Fort Hays State and league-leader Nebraska-Kearney before returning home to finish the regular season schedule Nov. 10-11.
