No. 11 UCO Tames Tigers

HAYS, Kan. (Nov. 3) – Malia Kaaiohelo and Jordan Spence proved nearly unstoppable with attacks at the net in powering Central Oklahoma to a crucial Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association road sweep of Fort Hays State here Friday night.

Kaaiohelo and Spence combined for 16 kills and no errors in 32 attacks as the No. 11-ranked Bronchos broke away from tight battles early in each set for a 26-16, 25-17, 26-19 victory.  UCO improved to 26-3 overall and 13-2 in the conference, keeping them one match behind No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney heading into Saturday's 7 p.m. showdown with the Lopers in Kearney, Neb.

"We had to battle in each set, but made some big plays throughout the match," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "I thought we played pretty well overall and took care of business.  Tomorrow night is going to be a tough, tough match and we'll have to be at our best."

The Bronchos hit a solid .274 in the match while holding FHSU to just an .052 attack percentage in claiming their fourth straight win, all on sweeps.

Taylor Bevis had a match-high 15 kills for UCO.  Kaaiohelo hit .571 with eight kills and no errors in 14 attacks, while Spence hit .444 with eight kills and no miscues in 18 attempts in addition to making four blocks (three solo, one assisted).

Alexis Washington and Karyn Chrisman added six kills apiece.  The Bronchos also got 37 assists and 11 digs from McKenzie Fyfe and 25 digs from Dominique Lipari.

UCO trailed early in all three sets before taking control and pulling away down the stretch.

The Tigers had a 4-2 lead at the outset of the opening set and it was tied 6-all before Bevis had back-to-back kills and Spence a kill and solo block during a 6-0 run that put UCO in control at 12-6.

The Bronchos were down most of the early going in the second set as well.  UCO overcame a 10-8 deficit to go ahead 15-14 before breaking away with a 7-0 scoring spurt highlighted by Spence, who knocked down two kills and made two solo blocks.

FHSU had a 10-7 advantage in the third set when Central moved away behind a 6-1 run capped by a Lipari ace.  The Bronchos led 17-15 before closing it out as Bevis and Allie Davis had two kills apiece.
