UCO Drops OT decision in Tahlequah

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma opened the final weekend of the season Friday night with a 1-0 double overtime loss to Northeastern State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association soccer.

The Bronchos drop to 7-8-2 on the season with the loss, and 4-4-2 in league play. UCO is in sixth place in the MIAA standings ahead of Sunday's finale against Missouri Southern.

Central Oklahoma took 15 shots Friday night. The Bronchos took four in the first half, but didn't put any on target. UCO cranked it up a notch in the second 45, taking seven shots and putting five on goal. But NSU goalkeeper Meg Smith was there to thwart away the chances. UCO took two more shots in both overtime periods before Shelby Brewster won the game on a golden goal in the 108th minute of play.

"We did a good job of getting chances tonight, but what we didn't do is make something happen on those chances," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We got a lot of shots off, and had a bunch of corner kicks, so we had our chances. Hats off to them for keeping us off the scoreboard."

Asha Haile, who leads the Bronchos with eight goals this season, led the offensive charge Friday. The sophomore forward took five shots on the night and put three on target. Morgan Cherry took four shots on the night, but none were on goal. Cherry also picked up a yellow card in the 98th minute.

Katie Killion and Michelle Molen each took two shots and put one each on goal.

Ally Salls played nearly 108 minutes in goal Friday. The junior had an outstanding game, making a season-high nine saves. She stopped three NSU shots in the first half, five more in the second half, and one in the first overtime. But Salls couldn't stop Brewster in a one-on-one situation in the second overtime, and dropped to 6-3 on the season.

Central Oklahoma travels to Joplin, Mo. Sunday afternoon for the final regular season game. The Bronchos are in sixth in the MIAA standings, and would have to travel back to Tahlequah next Wednesday if the standings hold their current form. UCO can jump up to No. 5, which would result in a trip to Hays, Kan. to take on Fort Hays State – a team the Bronchos beat 4-1 last weekend in Edmond.
