Late Rally Gives UCO Sweep of Gorillas

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Oct. 24) – Taylor Bevis had two kills and two assisted blocks in spearheading a closing run that polished off a stirring third-set comeback as the No. 13-ranked Bronchos claimed a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of Pittsburg State here Tuesday night.

UCO scored the final six points of the final set to rally from a 24-20 deficit in finishing off a hard-fought 25-23, 25-20, 26-24 victory, improving to 23-3 overall and 10-2 in the league.

"It was a tough match and we really had to fight tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "I was proud of the team for staying in there and battling in the third set when things didn't look good.  We kept at it and made some great plays at the end to finish off the match."

The Bronchos got behind 6-1 early in the third set while trying to finish off the sweep and battled from behind the entire way.  It was a 24-20 deficit before Bevis took over, with the junior All-American following a PSU hitting error by teaming up with Malia Kaaiohelo for a block that made it 24-22.

Bevis knocked down a kill to make it a one-point set, another hitting error by the Gorillas tied it and UCO took its first lead on another Bevis/Kaaiohelo block before Bevis' final kill of the night capped the frantic late comeback.

Bevis finished with 21 kills and just five errors in 51 attacks for a .314 hitting percentage while adding 13 digs and the two assisted blocks.  Jordan Spence hit .308 with nine kills, Karyn Chrisman added seven kills and Allie Davis had seven.

McKenzie Fyfe directed the UCO attack with 41 assists and Callie Bangasser led the defense with a season-high 23 digs.

The Bronchos never trailed in the first set and led 17-8 after a Fyfe kill ended an 8-0 run.  PSU rallied with a 15-6 run to pull even at 23-all before a Bevis kill and Gorilla attack error ended it.

Bevis came through again in the second set, collecting three kills in a 4-0 UCO run that turned a 14-14 tie into an 18-14 lead and the Bronchos pulled away from there.

Central returns home Saturday, hosting Missouri Southern in a 5:30 p.m. conference match.
