UCO drills Fort Hays State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half of its regular season home finale Sunday afternoon en route to a 4-1 win over Fort Hays State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

The Bronchos improve to 7-7-2 on the season and 4-3-2 in conference play.

"That's what this team is capable of," UCO head coach Mike Cook said after the game. "We've seen it in spurts this season. These girls are plenty capable of playing a really solid game on defense and putting up a few goals like they did today."

Katie Killion got the goal scoring started for the Bronchos Sunday. The junior forward has led the team in goals for each of the past two seasons, but missed the first nine games of this season with an injury. She scored her first goal of the season in the 18th minute and did so in dominating fashion.

Killion got the ball just past midfield, and with lots of room to work, took off dribbling down field on a break. She beat the only defender that kept her between the goalie, then smashed home a shot to the left of the keeper, and put the Bronchos up 1-0.

Morgan Cherry scored in similar fashion in the 44th minute. She took a charge on the right side of the box, and shot from around 15 yards out, scoring her fifth goal of the season and putting the Bronchos up 2-0.

UCO goalkeeper Ally Salls only needed to make two first-half saves to keep the score 2-0 at halftime. The Bronchos put up nine shots in the first 45, with seven of them landing on target.

In the second half, Asha Haile briefly became the team's leading scorer in the 58th minute. Haile took a pass from Kelsie Eason on the left side of the box, made a quick move further to the left, and scored her eighth goal of the season to make it 3-0 UCO.

Not to be outdone, Eason added her eighth goal of the season in the 67th minute. Cherry had the ball, double-teamed inside the Hays penalty area. A defender tried to clear it, but Eason was the first to the ball, and immediately took a shot from 20 yards out on the right corner of the box. The score made it 4-0.

Fort Hays got on the scoreboard in the 74th when Olympia Katsouridis headed home a cross from Kylie Thomas. Salls saved the only other second-half shot from the Tigers to keep UCO in the winning way.

Salls' three saves on the day improved her record in goal to 6-2 on the season. The junior has made 28 saves this season and has a 1.39 goals allowed average.

Central Oklahoma will play its final two matches on the road next weekend. UCO travels to Tahlequah to take on Northeastern State on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. The Bronchos will play Missouri Southern on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Joplin, Mo.

The MIAA Tournament begins Wednesday, Nov. 1. UCO is looking to make a return trip to the championship game this season.
