Central Missouri Upends Bronchos

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Oct. 21) – A tough second-set loss put Central Oklahoma in a hole it couldn't dig out of and the No. 10-ranked Bronchos fell to No. 18 Central Missouri in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown here Saturday night.

UCO lost an early six-point lead in the second set and dropped a 13-25, 29-31, 26-24, 17-25 decision to the Jennies in falling out of the league lead.  The Bronchos are now 22-3 on the season and 9-2 in the conference, tied with UCM (19-5, 9-2) for second in the MIAA standings behind Nebraska-Kearney (23-2, 10-1).

"We got off to a horrible start to start the match and then had our chances in the second set to even it up, but just didn't take advantage," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Central Missouri just outplayed us tonight.  We have to put it behind us and get ready for the next match."

The Jennies hit .311 in the match compared to just .222 for UCO.

Taylor Bevis led the Bronchos with 22 kills and a .305 attack percentage while adding 15 digs.  Jordan Spence and Karyn Chrisman had nine kills apiece and Allie Davis chipped in five.  McKenzie Fyfe handed out 43 assists to go along with 13 digs and Dominique Lipari had 23 digs.

Central Missouri jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set in rolling to that easy win and then the two squads battled through a monumental back-and-forth second set that featured 16 ties and seven lead changes.

UCO led 10-4 early in that set before the Jennies went on a 9-1 run to go ahead 13-11.  It was then tied at 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 before UCM finally scored two straight points to pull out the dramatic win and take control of the match.

The Bronchos were down 7-4 early in the third set, but Chrisman had back-to-back kills to spark an 8-3 spurt that put Central on top 12-10.  It was a 20-16 lead when the Jennies reeled off seven unanswered points to surge in front 23-20.

UCO rallied to tie it at 24-all and then won it with consecutive kills by Bevis and Chrisman.

But there would be no dramatic comeback for the Bronchos as Central Missouri bolted to an 8-2 lead in the fourth set en route to closing out the match.

UCO is back in action again Tuesday, going to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on Pittsburg State in another league tilt.
