Bronchos drop conference clash with Kearney

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Nebraska-Kearney Friday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos drop to 6-7-2 on the season after the loss. UCO is 3-3-2 in MIAA play.

"Kearney is a good team defensively," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "But we had plenty of chances that we should have put away. We have to put those chances away, you can't afford not to."

Central Oklahoma tested Kearney goalkeeper Allie Prososki early and often. The Bronchos took five first-half shots, and put four of them on goal. UCO kept that pressure on for the entire game, taking nine second-half shots with three on goal.

Senior forward Mikayla Lowery had multiple chances to give the Bronchos an early lead, and a few chances to tie the game late. Lowery took three shots Friday – all on target. Asha Haile took five shots, but couldn't land any on goal.

Kaitlyn Asher played a solid game in goal for the Bronchos. The freshman made eight saves on the day, four in each half. Kearney, who hadn't shown much offensive dominance all season, at least kept applying pressure to the Bronchos throughout the match Friday.

In the 56th minute, it paid off.

UNK's Alex Dayton scored her first goal of the season after corralling a loose ball on the right side of the penalty box. She turned and put a shot up high enough to get over Asher's head and give Kearney a 1-0 lead. UCO never recovered.

Asher finished the day in goal making two more saves to keep the Bronchos within a goal. Her record on the season though drops to 1-5-2.

Central Oklahoma returns to the pitch for the final home game of the 2017 regular season. The Bronchos host Fort Hays State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Lowery will be honored before the match in a Senior Day ceremony.
