Bronchos blank Bearcats

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma held a 20th season celebration during its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup with Northwest Missouri Sunday afternoon and capped it off with a 3-0 win.

"It's great to see the players that have shaped this program into what it is today come back and support the team," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "The team likes to see that too and it's good for everybody when we're able to get a win on a day like this."

Cook has been the coach at Central for all 20 seasons. Sunday was his 286th win with the Bronchos.

Asha Haile and Kelsie Eason, who both entered the day as the team's leading scorers, both scored a goal Sunday. They followed a Northwest own goal spurred by a Katie Killion shot that got passed the keeper.

"We were able to do some things offensively today that we've been missing," Cook said. "We had a solid attack today and played well together for the whole game. That's what helped us today."

The game was a scoreless tie through the first half. UCO put up six first-half shots, but only one on target. Northwest put up five shots and also put one on goal. Ally Salls made one of her three saves in the first half.

After the break in the 56th minute, Killion fought for space on the left side of the box, earning just enough room to fire a shot at the Northwest keeper. The shot went passed the keeper, and a Northwest defender tried to clear it off the line. Her clearance however ricocheted off the goalkeeper and back into the net to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

Haile followed suit in the 63rd minute, slotting home a nice shot from the left side of the box after receiving a cross from Falyn Dodd. That gave Haile the team-high seven goals on the season.

Not to be outdone, Eason made it 3-0 in the 77th minute, scoring her seventh goal of the year. Eason took a corner and sent in a short pass to Mikayla Lowery, who tried to turn and shoot but was deterred. Lowery then passed out to Eason, who actually looked to be sending in a cross. But the ball found its way into the bottom left corner of the goal, going right under the Northwest goalkeeper and in for the game's final score.

The Bronchos ended up outshooting Northwest 16-7 on the day, with an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. For UCO, seven players took a shot on goal. Killion took two. Salls picked up the win and moved to 5-2 on the season. She has 25 saves on the year and a 1.45 goals allowed average.

The Bronchos return to action next week with the final two home matches of the season. UCO takes on Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m., and Fort Hays State next Sunday at 1 p.m.

UCO finishes the regular season with trips to Tahlequah and Joplin, Mo. in two weeks.
